Rechamber a Hornet to .221 Rem
« on: March 28, 2012, 11:51:57 PM »
I've been kicking around the idea of getting a rifle in .221 Rem for a while now and since none of the off the shelf rifles in this round tickle my fancy, why not rechamber a .22 Hornet to .221?  The 2 rounds are only a couple thousandths of an inch different in length so I'm not worried about it working.

My concern is how the extractor for the rimmed Hornet case will pull out the rimless .221 Rem round.  Should I order a .223 extractor or perhaps go with a rimmed version of the round...

If I rebarrel the other rifle I'm considering for this round, I would have to go with a rimmed version...

Any thoughts on the project?

Tony

I used a 223 extractor on my 221 Fireball(rechambered Hornet), works great.  ;)

What kind of velocity are you getting with the fireball? I just picked up another Hornet, and was just pondering.

The photos are not loading, but I did see 3100. Thanks. I see from the prints that I could not get the bullet any closer on the .221 than the Hornet. A 55 grain will not touch the lands with the bullets in the case on either of my Hornets, and I was hoping to see that happen. I see Nosler is also supposed to be supplying brass, "Norma" for the fireball.

3074fps with the 40gr Vmax and RL7, looks like the server is down again.  :-\
