I think without a doubt the current flood of Russian Mosin Nagants.......all models.  Then perhaps the K31 Swiss straight pull actions.

I know this sounds crazy, But I think the best Bargain on the surplus
market today is the M-95 Steyr carbines. as far as
Quality To Price Ratio goes.
Bad thing about them is "AMMO" in shooting quantities is scarce!

Next would be the Carl Gustaf Swedish M-96s
(I can't think of any modern bolt action I would trade mine for!)

Next would be the SWISS Stuff!

S.Sumner is right Century Arms has M95 Steyr 8x56r in arsenal wrap, as far as swede's go its either Samco or Sarco for them.  I see that AIM SURPLUS has swiss k31's  and i think these three rifles will be scarce soon.   And the mosin nagant M59 and M38 too.  Since the mosins are affordable  and all available the M91/30,  M59 or M91/59, as some call it, the M38, and M44's make a great collectable set.  The M39 Finnish Mosin is available right now to after a long absence of not being for sale.  The czech VZ-24 8MM at Aim surplus is another goodie too.  I also think now is the time to buy this collecting thing is growing at a fast pace and as supplies run out prices will go up but with the inflex of importing who knows whats ahead and what we will see in the future?  Like the lot of French MAS 49/56's that SOG came up with a while back there were rearsenaled and stored for many years we actually got brand new guns fot $189 my point is if we see it when its for sale and affordable we better buy it before its gone.                       BigBill

On the M91/30 you have an option with AIM on a hex reciever or round reciever the hex is $10 more.   They also have Albanian and Yugo sks's right now too that are still reasonably priced.  Its kind of funny a local gun shop has had nothing to do with sks's or military guns I just seen a case of yugo sks's there for sale I think its a little late to try and cash in on the sks market right now.  He sure lost a lot of business in the past not capturing the military market too.  I think were they lose is not having them in the store in racks so we can pick thru what we want.  If they order one gun for us and it comes in and we don't like it they have the hassle of sending it back and losing $$ if we don't buy so in the end its the militsry surplus guns that get a bad rap?? When its really the dealer for not investing the time and cash to do it right.  We did have a great  dealer who had mostly C&R's for us and he went out of business when the state started banning Asssualt weapons here I guess it pissed him off so he folded which is too bad he sure would be raking in the cash right now with C&R's gaining fame.  I still think there are warehouse's in Europe still full of these treasures waiting to come here this last batch of mosin's and mausers proves that.  There is also another supply too its the older collectors here dumping their collections I have run into some rare guns and great buys too this way.  So its a buyers market right now we just have to go with the best deals.

The Swiss K-31 by far.......accurate, precision made and almost all of the used on the market now are in pretty good shape.  Oh, and one other fairly important thing.......the price is excellent!!

I think the Yugo M48A are one of the better milsurp rifles available.  You can find a new specimen for around $200.00, which is more than some of the Mosins, but I think they are worth it.

If money is not an issue, then the CMP M1 Garand wins over everything else.

BBill,

I have just purchased a VZ-24 as my this year's project rifle.  I have been looking for one of the Spanish Mauser Carbines in .308.  But I seem to be just late as the recent sellers in Shotguns News have run out.  Are you familiar with this rifle and do ou know where I can get one?

I would write down the features you want and decide.

I would look at what your needs are, do you plan to shoot it alot, is accuracy paramount, how about appearance, is it a knock about for the barn, or a collector item.  Go to the gun shows and hold up each and see how it feels to you if you are going to shoot it alot.  Or, get several of the different kinds, shoot em for awhile, then trade them off.

I have owned quite a few of them, although no Swiss, or M-95's yet.  The Mosins are priced right, ammo is cheap, they are accurate, the bolt handle is too short.  The Mausers are nice, accurate, reliable, they tend to kick abit in 8 MM, ammo is cheap and available.  The Swedish Mauser barrel heats up easily, stays hot too long (20 minutes once), but very accurate.   Enfields are fun shooters, ammo is a cheap, accurate guns, the feeding is not as reliable on them as others.  French MAS 36's stock is way too short.  Jap rifles are strong and accurate, ammo is pricey unless you handload like I did for 15 years.

I have put on removable slipon pads on my Mosin and Yugo Mauser to lesson the recoil, good idea.  I use black powder cleaner and Hoppes on the bores when using corrosive surplus ammo, easier cleanup when you handload or use commerical ammo.

If you are looking at a financial investment, concentrate on the European guns, Swiss, Swedish Mausers, German, and American Sringfields/Enfields, they are better finished, desirable, and will, down the road bring an easier sale and return on your monetary investment.  The American guns have in my opinion been overpriced, but they do sell and keep increasing in value.

If your into SKS's the Yugo variant is a good buy as well.  I got mine from AIM for $89.00.  After cleaning off the cosmo and wiping the stock with Lemon Oil you could call it NIB.

K-31's are a great deal now for one of the best shooting C&R rifles out there.
