Question on .50Cal Smokeless MZ conversion.
« on: March 20, 2012, 07:06:11 PM »
Is there a Handi barrel that can be used for a .50Cal. smokeless muzzle loading conversion?

I understand that a barrel in .500S&W is the wrong bore diameter.  Am I wrong?  Anyone have a suggestion on what to use, and can it be done.  I am ruling out the use of a custom barrel, and stub job as that would make the conversion too expensive.  Any input is appreciated.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

OSR,

There isn't a factory barrel that I am aware of that has the right bore diameter for a 50 cal smokeless MZ conversion.  The 500 S&W barrel is the closest but it is about .01" undersize.   The 45-70 makes a great 45 cal smokeless MZ but if you want a 50 cal smokeless you are probably looking at a Savage 10ML.

For a .50 cal, these guys are about your only option, short of a custom build. I bought one of these around 5 or 6 years ago, I wasn't impressed, but several love them. They have made some changes in the breech plugs since then, and no doubt for the better. They were quality Douglas barrels, my examples bore was immaculate, but didn't care for the finish they put on it, and the way the breech plug was done back then. I shipped mine back unfired for a full refund, minus my shipping costs. They are not cheap, but I do know they shoot.

You can use a 500sw barrel if you get a custom sizer made and you can use a barrel drop to make your sizer and then just re size your .500 bullets.

Might work for conicals/plain base cast but you would not be able to shoot 50 cal sabots.  There is also the potential for an overpressure situation shooting non-sabot bullets in a smokeless MZ as you loose the failsafe of the sabot failure.

Thats what I was talking about full size plated bullets I have a 45cal H&R set up like that, I resize .458 bullets but I can still use sabots too, in the 500SW you wouldn't be able to unless you get custom sabots also dont count on the sabot for a pressure relief valve see the CVA unsafe loading vid.
