Hi guys, this has attributes of centerfire, rimfire, and ML or breech load involved and was not sure where to post it. I posted it in the rimfire section but I think it will also be of interest to those in the centerfire forum..enjoy

Wow, a modern Ferguson rifle!
...are you powdering it or just using the shotgun primer for your charge?

Just using the shotgun primer for now but it is really in the beginning stages. I guess you could put a few grains of Trail Boss, Pyrodex, Triple Seven or BP substitute in after the pellet/lead bullet and before you put the shotgun primer in. Less than 24 hours ago this was a wild idea while trying to fall asleep. So far it works!!!....<><....:)

Just when I  think it's all been thought of, someone thinks of something else.  I've got so many projects now I can't see daylight, and you've just given me another one! ;D

The mind can be a dangerous thing, especially when your drifting in and out of awareness. Reminds me of what happens right after someone says, "Hey, watch this!!"... ;D
You can sure have a lot of fun with these fine little H&R's. Of course a fertile mind helps. A question to those astute members, if I have been told that I have a "fertile" mind, does that infer that my mind is fertilized? As in full of fertilizer?....<><.... ???

Ahh Grasshopper, so much wisdom from one so young....

P.S - I am posting an update and the first abbreviated "range" tests from both the new .17/57 H&R and .22/209 H&R varmint rounds in my original thread in the rimfire section...these things are GREAT so far....<><....:)

It occurs to me that how well the barrel is fitted to the receiver will show in the blow-by.

...tight and square will have very little and even around.

...loose and canted will have more blow-by and concentrated in one area.

Does that show with just the primers?

I think it is a primer powered pellet gun. Sounds fun.

1-2-3
1.  Fit a rimfire barrel on a centerfire receiver.

2.  Drop a suitable projectile (pellet, or...) into the barrel and force it into the rifling.

3.  push a shotgun primer into the barrel instead of a rimfire cartridge.

4.  Close the action.

...The next step is up to you.

I have a old friend who has dabbled in this area before. Just speaking to him, we realized your ingenuity. He had problems with the pellet skirts shearing off. He thought it had everything to do with chamber throating. He tried different throating techniques and never had great success. Now he finally realized that by seating the pellet into the rifling, the skirt is somewhat shielded and supported. Success! He's excite to try it himself now. :)

For those that may consider a reloaded rimfire case, know that it takes about 100lbs of pressure to have consistent ignition. He recommend a felt cleaning pellet over the powder and a .180" BB with a delicate crimp.

He's gonna make a pellet seating tool made specifically to mate to the base/skirt of his preferred pellet. It should accurately place the pellet into the rifling the same way every time. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

andy, i remeber sometime back when J3 wasa lil'fella.... he done sumthin like that witha
sportster barrel, i think... ::)
ona sb1 an used gamo platinum pba armor pellets with nobelsport 209 primers....
i still gottum from that era.... ;D  i jus hadta go look at'um ;)
he wittel'd downa wood dowel un til it fit jus rite inside tha skirt for positioning tha pellet
like he wanted...... he liked tha outcome, and said... its better in accuracy than-tha 22lr
option....... 8)   and he never hada skirt separate with his technique ;D
never thought about any dangers cuz tha primers, of course... only produce minor pressures cord'n to piezo testing that we performed.
the outcome is simular to tha results most have with standard colibries.

None over a chronograph yet that I know of. This is just the beginning for me on this idea. For me it started less than 48 hours ago so we are all in on the bottom floor on this so to speak. If you go to the rimfire thread there are a few more responses and ideas there...one thing for sure, these little guns are FUN!!!....<><.... :)

so... why not just shoot 22 shorts? I know it defeats the purpose of the "fun" aspect of it, but same difference, right?

Pellet guns are so much work though! I could see myself shooting this in my shop in the winter.

Work??  ??? A $40 Crosman will get you there, break the barrel open, place a pellet in the chamber, close the action, aim and pull the trigger, where's the work?  ;) I use one all the time for backyard pests, killed a possum last week.  8)

It was an attempt at humor!  ??? I just think its kind of a cool idea. I have one of those $25 Russian single lever cock air rifles, and it is surprisingly accurate. Not a target gun, but it hammers sparrows. Now if I could lay on a mat in my shop in  the winter with my 17 Furball / .17HH,and shoot tiny targets it would be good cheap practice for p-dogs, with one of the guns I use
