I love the Wingmaster.  It is a great gun.  The best way to tune up your express is probably to sell it, and spend the extra $250 on a Wingmaster.  If you replace the barrel and wood, for instance, you've already gotten there.  I also think, but am not certain, that the Wingmaster has a more refined trigger group than its promotional counterpart.

That said, lots of folks have expressed how to smooth up ol' Bessie, and they are cheap or free.  Flitz in the action a few hundred times works pretty well, for instance.  Wingmasters are beautiful guns, but not too great in the duck blind if you are looking to keep them beautiful.

$400 for a Wingmaster that isn't too bad ($35 more for choke tube threads):

I have in the last few months bought two used police rem870 shotguns. One came with the extension mag $225 and the other did not $195. Outside of the stock finish they are good reliable shotguns. First one I removed the old finish, sanded down to get to good wood, used a stain pretreatment and finished off with tru oil. Came out looking great. Second one will get the same treatment. Both shotguns say wingmaster on the receiver. And are equal in smoothness to my 870 wingmaster/deer slug shotgun. Frank

I have seen the box conversions for sale but don't understand why it would take ANY engineering on the forearm! A standard corncob doesn't overlap the receiver so wouldn't create a problem.

I like the better sporting fore arm . But my police mag had the small one and it comes back a bit over the loading port. But why would one want a mag hanging down ? when you can get up to 10 + extensions which are faster to top off.

The magazine is a pain in the backside but it does provide increased firepower, that's why M4's have detachable box mags instead of tube mags.. It's a lot easier to switch in a fresh box than feed shells in singly.. and I've never seen a forearm that covered the loading port...

The one I bought was similiar.  It came with the short mag tube.  It paid about 190 for it.  It was in good shape except from the finish from staying in a hot police car.  I gave it a good coat of cerakote and changed the stocks to houge rubber overmolded.

My 870 social gun came from a gunshow many years ago. The dealer had tables full or Colt Sauers, Weatherby's etc and a beat up Wingmaster with the short barrel and standard length mag. The blue was fair but the dash clamp marks were very evident on the barrel. He was asking $150. I offered $75 and after assuring him it would indeed be cash he accepted.. A good friend who handles mostly military surplus supplied a Remington made top folding stock marked for LE use only and another acquaintence hand a mag extension.. It has done just fine ever since.. My experience with LE weapons was that they are less shot to exhaustion than just carried forever. I've seen ammo that was badly worn from being unloaded and reloaded at each shift change.. I've other shotuns for security but the 870 I trust the most.. along with a loaded 1911!

Gunnut69, 870 sir are not "beat up" as you say !
They carry honest scars from honest work !  ;D  beat up makes one think not 100% anymore which is seldom the case.  ;)

Well said sir..! I grew up with the M12 Winchester and still have a love of them but the 870 is beside the bed to sort out those things that go bump in the nite.. Then I would leave the 1911 with my lovely wife..at leeaast until her S&W M15 gets restocked..
