Takedown Ruger 10-22
« on: March 31, 2012, 08:05:50 PM »
Just wanted to give you guys a heads up before the word gets out and these get a long waiting list on them.  http://www.ruger.com/products/ruger1022Takedown/models.html I got one today. Initial impression is pretty well what you would expect for a regular 10-22. The trigger was about 7lb or a hair over, with a guess. I put in a previous stoned hammer before firing. Dropped it to about 3lb. Did 10 strings of 5 taking the barrel off in between after I got the M8 sighted in. POI didn't shift. Around 1" groups at 50 with wolf. Not a tack driver, but not too shabby, just an average 10-22. Taken down length is 18.5" for the longer half (barrel).  I just wanted to put out a quick overview since I think it came out today or yesterday. You know what is going to happen once they start advertising it and everyone watching those prepper shows figures out it will fit in their BOB.
Have a good day.

Looks really neat.  My only complaint is the finish.  I don't mind stainless if they would blue it.  Maybe I'm just paranoid about light flashing all over the woods.  But the takedown concept is a great selling point.

No sales here - won't even come close to replacing my Browning SAR.   But then I'm not a fan of 10/22's either.

Seems like they ought to be concentrating on getting caught up on current model production that can't keep up with current demand, AND getting the issues solved with their semi's and machining issues before bringing out another new model.

Ruger is known for beating a dead horse for years. Just look at the mini. What, 30 years of very poor accuracy before they retooled?  I actually like the 10-22. Well I like to build rifles off the action at any rate. Thier rifling station must have worn out a decade ago because the days of a factory moa 10-22 are long gone. But even a 2 moa that looks like it can return to zero is going to be a pretty good survival rifle and a lot less than the browning. Change out the barrel and hammer and I imagine it should get back to 1 moa or less just like any 10-22 does with a little accurizing. Hoping I can get another .25 or so to shrink with lapping. If so will probably just stick with the stock barrel and paint it. 3/4" 50 yard groups would surely be minute of squirrel head out to 65-70 yards.  :D

Cost is not realitive when I want something.   After five 10/22 Jam-O-Matics over the years that all but one shot patterns instead of groups I took the plunge way back in 2000.    Built a semi custom 10/22 with the best parts, spent way too much on the project considering I only shot about a box through it and it's been a safe queen ever since.   50 rounds did show it could be very accurate thanks to the White Mountain match barrel that Ken did for me, it even only jammed once despite the match chamber... but I just didn't like it enough to bother any further with it.   For a SAR the High Standard 31 I've had since 1959 still shoots as good as ever, doesn't matter whether with 22 short/long/long rifle or if they are mixed... and its still in like new condition.    So much for the 10/22's even if the 31 doesn't break in half.   The Browning will, as did the Win 1890/1906 and Rossi 62SA pumps I've had will.

I handled one of these in a store yesterday.  Neat little gun.   I agree that the current rash of prepper TV shows will help put some demand on these.

I have a 10-22 that I've had for twenty five years that I bought used.  I've tried a few different barrel, stock, etc set ups and have tried buying a new one a couple times just so i could have them set up differently.  I have yet to find one that works as well as my old one.  Maybe they made them better then, maybe mine is just well broken in.  For whatever reason, my old gun with some basic trigger work done ten years ago seems to be the best I can get from a 10-22.  Accurate and reliable.

I think you are right on.  Ive read many a thread about folks trying to "shorten" their 10/22 for BOB or back packing.  I checked out the Rimfire Central Web where results on one of the takedown's was tested and shooting 1/2 inch with the right ammo at 50 yards.
