Has anyone converted a 357 Mag Handi into a 357/44 B&D?
« on: April 05, 2012, 08:12:26 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has done the rechamber of a 357 Mag Handi to 357/44 B&D?

It does the same job as a 357 Maxi and 35 Rem, with much cheaper brass.

357 Max - Remington $30/100

35 Remington - Remington $63/100

44 Mag - Starline $20/100

They've been discussed before, nice round for TC pistols, but in a rifle the 35 Rem has a big advantage, specially on an SB2 frame using Super 35 Rem data, 180gr @2450fps! The 357-44 B&D has a case capacity of 35.6gr water compared to 50.8gr for the 35 Rem and 32.7gr for the 357Maxi, 357 Herrett is in the middel with 40.8gr.

I have a Ruger Black Hawk that was converted back in the 70"s, by a gun smith in Ca.He called it the 357/44 Bobcat mag. It is a great round, very accurate but is about the same as a .357 max. in power. You also have a 4th die to make the brass from 44 mag. ( I think you could use a 41 mag. sizer adjusted correctly) It was worth it in the hand gun due to limited case length. I think the .357 mag is a better choice in the Handi.

I went one step further.  I converted a 357 Mag Handi into a 358 GNR, which is a 445 Super Mag case necked down to 358.  It's just a longer version of the 357/44 B&D.  It is very similar in power to the 35 Remington, but when I had this done, a 1.800" 35 Remmy wasn't legal...  :)

If I had it to do now, and I was a reloader, I'd just go straight to 35 Remington.  If I wanted to get REAL tricky, I would cut a rim on that 1.800" 35 Remington chamber and then use trimmed down 303 British cases, for the higher MAP they allow (50,000psi).
