I am getting into TC G2 rifle/carabine fever
« on: March 24, 2012, 09:11:05 AM »
Hi everyone:
As the title says:  I am venturing into the TC G2 rifle configuration and I have three calibers in mind to start with.
1.  5.7x28 FN (18-21" barrel)
2.  7x30 Waters ( (21-23" barrel)
3.  357 Magnum ( (20" barrel)
In that order.
I would love to hear pros-cons and advice from TC owners that have experienced with the 5.7x28FN.  Thank you.

Congrats on catching the bug. I have the 7x30 waters and it's a dandy deer cartridge. Also have the 6.8 spc and a 16" 22 Hornet. A great little platform.

I forgot to mention in my previous message:  Those are the calibers that I "whish" to start with.  I would love to start with the 5.7x28FN or perhaps the 7x30 Waters.

I'm curious what are your planned uses for your cartridge choices I'm guessing...

5.7 X 28 = pistol cartridge good for plinking/varmints might even make a good close in coyote calling round.
7-30 Waters = rifle cartridge a very good choice for deer hunting.
357 mag = pistol cartridge good for plinking/home defense.

Am I close?    :)

 :)  Camp cook,
You are very close.  I want the 5.7x28FN because it seems that I can shoot hundreds of rounds without having to take a loan from the back to feed it.
The 7x30 waters will be a nice deer rifle, using bullets that I already have available for my 7mm-08 Rem rifles.  The nice thing is that I hear this cartridge is very accurate in a TC contender (G2).
The 357 mag is one of my favorites and it will go along with my handguns in the same caliber.  I do have a TC barrel in 357 mag in the pistol configuration but my eye sight is gotten worse and I cannot get the best out of it unless I am bench resting (which is not your normal hunting set up).
The 357 mag will be also for deer and plinking.  But I take one at the time and also add a second G2 action to keep it dedicated as a rifle.

OK.
I order the 5.7x28FN from Ed's Contenders.  I should be getting it sometime in the middle of next week.  I can't wait to start reloading for it.  I would live to hear advice from others that already own one and have had some time to experiment with it.  The powders I have at hand:
Blue Dot, 2400, Lit'lGun, H110, H4198, Bullseye, Unique, Red Dot..

Lil' Gun works pretty good.
Will have to see if I can find my notes on other powders/bullets combos.

Well,  I received the 5.7x28FN barrel and I purchase one box of 50 rounds of S195LF (27 gr Lead Free) factory ammo for testing my new 18" barrel.  I was totally disapointed: the smallest group I cuold get with this load was 4 inches at 25 yards (bench reste and scoped).  I also noticed the impact were key-holes in most of the cases.  I measured the bullet diameter right at the point where the bullet and the neck of the cartridge meets and I was able to bet 0.219" instead of 0.224" as any .22 cal centerfire cartidge.  Since that was thee only load I tested, it was futile to keep on trying it.  I decided to do some shooting with my Taurus 218 bee (6.5" bbl) and I was able to print under one inch with 3.8gr Red Dot, 45gr hornet sp, and CCI-500.
I can't wait to get my reloading dies to start experimenting my own 5.7x28FN brewings.  Any one of you experience the same thing with the factory loads?
