I've known several couples that started small like that, but haven't met any that downsized like that while their kids were at home. I've known people that lived in old-style travel trailers that were smaller than that, and they were quite nice. One couple added a nice screen porch to theirs and it was one of the nicest places to visit.

The ones that started small never had a mortgage. They'd buy small (usually a run-down mobile home), then keep saving for the next one, and eventually end up in a nice house that was paid off and new when they hit middle age.

I don't know that it's necessarily better, but it is different and the bank doesn't get as much money from you in the long run.

Good heavens! I'm on the vanguard of a movement! I built something like this for my kids to use as a tree house years ago, and I still use it to camp out in the back yard sometimes. There will probably be a boom of some kind where these things sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Sure makes it easy to afford daily essentials when there ain't no large spaces to heat and cool.  I am hoping to get into a small place like that once I get back on my feet.  I, too, am a victim of the recession.  Income went from $40k a year to $19k a year.

If my wife would, I'd buy a nice garden shed and live in it.  It's all I need.

That's funny...I floated this idea to my wife at Home Depot last week-"Lets buy a nice piece of property in the styx and put one of these nice big sheds on it for shelter" To my surprise she was receptive to the idea.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

  • I feel much better now knowing it will get worse.
Wife and I lived for 7 years on a very narrow 40 foot Catamaran, then went into a house just to sell it and move to a 32 foot Power Dory.

When you don't have all the extra"crap" you be surprised how little space you actually need. Now with all the exrtra crap we find 800 sqft small.
