any harvesting ideas for buckwheat?

We planted a patch of buckwheat the other day. If the birds don't eat it, maybe we'll get a crop, but is there a good way to harvest it w/o a combine?

cut it with a Scythe or sickle, and stand it in shocks to cure, then thresh the shocks, and winnow to separate the grain from the chaff

Shocking it green might be a way to keep the seeds on the plants. Hadn't thought og that, but letting it dry laying down is a good way to reseed  wherever its laying. Found that out last yr. I might just try shocks. Then I could always haul them over to the neighbor's and throw them in the combine.
