OSLO, Norway (AP) — The terror trial against an anti-Muslim fanatic who confessed to killing 77 people in Norway starts Monday amid worries that he will use the proceedings to showcase his radical views.
After opening statements, Anders Behring Breivik is set to testify for five days, explaining why he set off a bomb in downtown Oslo, killing eight, and then shot to death 69 people, mostly teenagers, at a Labor Party youth camp on Utoya island, outside the Norwegian capital.
Since Breivik has confessed to the July 22 attacks — claiming they were necessary to protect Norway from being taken over by Muslims — the key issue that remains unresolved is his mental health.
The 33-year-old Norwegian was found insane in one examination that recommended committing him to compulsory psychiatric care, while a second assessment found him mentally competent to be sent to prison. It's up to the judges in Oslo's district court to decide which diagnosis they find most believable.
If deemed mentally competent, he would face a maximum prison sentence of 21 years or an alternate custody arrangement under which the sentence is prolonged for as long as an inmate is deemed a danger to society.
Those who survived the shooting massacre are bracing for the horror to return during the trial.
"I do not know how I will react, I do not think you can prepare for it," said Stine Renate Haaheim, a 27-year-old Labor Party lawmaker who survived the Utoya massacre by swimming away from the island.
Haaheim said she is concerned that Breivik will use the intense media focus during the trial to draw attention to his extremist views. Although she is curious about what snapped inside Breivik to turn him into a mass killer, she said "I don't think it will give any meaning to what has happened."
Police will seal off streets around the court building, where journalists, survivors and relatives of victims can watch the proceedings in a 200-seat courtroom built specifically for the trial. Thick glass partitions have been put up to separate victims and their families from the defendant.
Norway's NRK television will broadcast parts of the trial, but is not allowed to show Breivik's testimony.
In a manifesto he published online before the attacks, Breivik wrote that "patriotic resistance fighters" should use trials "as a platform to further our cause."
Breivik surrendered to police 1 hour and 20 minutes after he arrived on Utoya. The police response was slowed by a series of mishaps, including the lack of an operating police helicopter and the breakdown of an overloaded boat carrying a commando team to Utoya.
Breivik claims he targeted the government headquarters in Oslo and the Labor Party youth camp to strike against the left-leaning political forces he blames for allowing immigration in Norway.
Breivik told investigators he is a resistance fighter in a far-right militant group modeled after the Knights Templar medieval crusaders, but police have found no trace of the organization and say he acted alone.
Anxious to prove he is not insane, Breivik has called right-wing extremists and radical Islamist to testify during the trial, to show that there are others who share his view of clashing civilizations.
His defense lawyer, Geir Lippestad, said Breivik's only regret is that the death toll wasn't higher.
"It is difficult to understand, but I am telling you this to prepare people for his testimony," Lippestad said.

What are the prison conditions like in Norway? I was lead to believe that it's pretty comfortable. Is he really going to be punished?

CONAN. Not sure but I bet they are not a big punishment. Seems they are afraid they might offend the bgs by executing them. Liberals, the world would be better off without them. From what I've heard they refuse to execute criminals because it's not pc, even a rabid dog like this guy. He seems pretty smug about the whole thing. I'm sure he will not suffer. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Norway Killer Admits Massacre, Claims Self-Defense      Norwegian Anders Behring Breivik gestures as he arrives at a courtroom, to face terrorism and premeditated murder charges, Oslo, Norway, April 16, 2012.     By KARL RITTER  OSLO, Norway April 16, 2012 (AP)

With a defiant closed-fist salute, a right-wing fanatic admitted Monday to a bomb-and-shooting massacre that killed 77 people in Norway but pleaded not guilty to criminal charges, saying he was acting in self-defense.
On the first day of his long-awaited trial, Anders Behring Breivik rejected the authority of the court as it sought to assign responsibility for the July 22 attacks that shocked Norway and jolted the image of terrorism in Europe.
Dressed in a dark suit and sporting a thin beard, Breivik smiled as a guard removed his handcuffs in the crowded court room. The 33-year-old then flashed his salute before shaking hands with prosecutors and court officials.
"I don't recognize Norwegian courts because you get your mandate from the Norwegian political parties who support multiculturalism," Breivik said in his first comments to the court.
Eight people were killed in Breivik's July 22 bombing of Oslo's government district and 69 others were slain in his shooting massacre at the left-leaning Labor Party's youth camp on Utoya island outside the capital. Breivik has said the attacks were necessary to protect Norway from being taken over by Muslims.
"I admit to the acts, but not criminal guilt," he told the court, insisting he had acted in self-defense.

View Full Size    Frank Augstein/AP Photo Norwegian Anders Behring Breivik gestures as he arrives at a courtroom, to face terrorism and premeditated murder charges, Oslo, Norway, April 16, 2012.     The key issue to be resolved during the 10-week trial is the state of Breivik's mental health, which will decide whether he is sent to prison or into psychiatric care. Anxious to prove he is not insane, Brevik will call right-wing extremists and radical Islamists to testify during the trial, to show that others also share his view of clashing civilizations.
Norway's NRK television was broadcasting parts of the trial live but was not allowed to show Breivik's testimony.
During Monday's opening session, he remained stone-faced and motionless as prosecutors read the indictment on the terror and murder charges, with descriptions of how each victim died, and when they explained how he prepared for the attacks.
But Breivik suddenly became emotional when prosecutors showed an anti-Muslim video that he had posted on YouTube before the killing spree, wiping away tears on his cheek with trembling hands.
After a lunch break, Breivik was again expressionless as he watched prosecutors present surveillance footage of the Oslo explosion. The blast ripped through the high-rise building that housed government headquarters, blowing out windows and filling surrounding streets with smoke and debris.
He didn't flinch as prosecutors played a three-minute recording of a young woman's frantic phone call to police from Utoya.
"Shots have been fired," the woman, who survived the massacre, said with panic in her voice. "I'm pretty sure that there are many injured."
More than a dozen shots in close succession could be heard as the woman fell silent.
"Are you still there?" the police officer asked.
"Yes," she whispered. She fell silent again, breathing into the phone as more shots cracked in the background.
Breivik also announced he doesn't recognize the authority of Judge Wenche Elisabeth Arntzen, because he said she is friends with the sister of former Norwegian Prime Minister and Labor Party leader Gro Harlem Brundtland.
The anti-Muslim militant described himself as a writer, currently working from prison, when asked by the judge for his employment status.

Ah... this Christian Killer doesn't mind killing. He doesn't like Muslims and doesn't like multiculturalism. Sounds a little familiar
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

If the cabin thing is true, I can think of a few people who would go to their own trial trying to negotiate for MORE time, not less.

As for the familiarity, it should be. A lot of Europe is up in arms about their immigration problems. France, Germany, England and Sweden at least have a lot of strife related to this, and it's causing a lot of problems in some of the cities.

yep, the moosilimbs made him do it, because the moosilimbs infected the minds of the Norwegian governmnet and young people who were showing solidarity with palestinians....Thus, being a patriot and 'Christian' first, he had to perform a 'pre-emptive strike"....Literally, he is invoking the Bush Doctrine in his defense... ::) ::) ::) ....sheeeezzz....just gets weirder and weirder...
