686-6 5"bbl load
« on: April 14, 2012, 02:10:51 PM »
Hi guys I'm new loading for revolver but am set up for 357 Mag carbine on my Dillon 550B with Horsady New dimension 3 die set
I just picked up some DRG 38-158 round nose flat point and some UNIQUE.  I also have H110 on hand
I am experienced rifle handloader but am after any special tips for revolver and suggestions for 686-6  5"bbl  load
I will go with adequate mouth flare and medium crimp right on to the angled crimp groove unless better tips.
Does tuning these loads make a big diff in accuracy the way it does with rifles?
Do people seat them out further in revolvers, if cylinder dimension permits, instead of crimp?

Thanks a lot

Crimp in the crimp groove do not go longer.

Revolvers don't shoot like rifles at least for the most part so no the load isn't as sensitive as rifle loads but for sure it will have a sweet spot with any bullet, powder, primer combination and finding it will maximize your accuracy.

Back when my hands were more steady and my eyes still young I often found I could get one inch five and six shot groups at 25 yards even free hand some times. These days I'm happy with 3" at 25 yards from the bench. My hands shake badly and my eyes just don't see the sights as they once did.

From my experience with S&W 586 and 686 revolvers it should be capable of an inch at 25 yards for 5/6 shots as you wish if the shooter is. Not every handgunner can reach that level of proficiency and some can do better.

thanks I loaded up a bunch with 4.5 gr UNIQUE , crimped in the groove, will practice with these then test a couple loads half grain increments higher assuming it's tame enough with recoil and no pressure
