Shot Some Today
« on: April 13, 2012, 12:12:38 PM »
I took 3 of my Rugers to the range today.  My .44 Special Flattop liked the Skeeter Skelton load of 7.5 grains of Unique and the Lee 240 grain bullet.  I was picking off pieces of clay birds at 25 yards.  My short barreled 4 5/8" Super Blackhawk shot really well(but a little high)  with the Lee 310 grain bullet over 10 grains of Unique.  It also shot great with the Ideal 429421 over 8.5 grains of Unique.  My 3 screw .357 with the 6.5" barrel shot the Ideal 358429 over 4 grains of Unique in .38 Special cases into 3" groups at 20 yards offhand.  I really love shooting the unconverted 3 screws.  Very good day...

All these loads are well within publish loading manual's limits except the 310 grain .44 Magnum load.  It came from John Taffin.

I can remember not to many years ago when a guy could pick up 3 screw 357s for around 200 bucks around here. those days are long gone. Only 3 screws i have left are one convered to a 4inch 44 spec and one converted to a 4 5/8s 41 mag. Never was a 357 fan but i too do like 3 screws.

I think of the .357 the same way I do a .22.  It's really cheap to shoot.  Brass is free, bullets are cheap or free, and it takes almost no powder.

a guy brought a nice 3 screw in to my work today to sell. it was 357, 5 or so inch barrel. has not had the transfer bar installed and looks unmolested in about 80% plus condition.he was asking $500 for it. i would really be interested in youalls opinions on if this is a decent price? if i remember, he said it was made about 1959,but i could be wrong on the date. i would really like to own it if its a decent buy. he said he would trade so im going to go thru my guns this weekend and see what trading material i got or just buy in outright. let me know what you think?

If it is a flattop $500.00 seems fair.  I paid $350.00 for mine but I think I got it cheap.

If it is something you want to play with and what you trade cost you a bunch less than that asking $500 cash, go for it. In 'collector' stuff, condition is EVERYTHING, so 80% doesnt sound like collector quality; shooter, yes.
Hey Swamp, hard to be disappointed in a Skeeter load, aint it! Im glad you got out to play with them. My 3 screw SS is growing on me too; ya'all talked me into it.......... ;D
