I sent my 7stw back to rem. I bought it used and got a good deal on it, probably because the previous owner had the same problem. It is a stainless bdl detachable mag gun. It would show pressure signs with mid range loads and anything much over the power level of 7rem mags would require you to beat the bolt handle open. I sturggled with it at the range a few days and eventually broke the extractor beating out rounds. I called them and they wanted me to sent it to an authorized repair facility because it was over 10 years old and they said they didnt work on guns that old. I talked to the guy and told him id rather have the custom shop look at it and he agreed to let me do it. They just called and said that they found the chamber was rough and it needed polishing. They said while they had the barrel off they squared up the action too. they also had to replace the trigger because the seal was  broke on the ajusments. the guy said because of the law suit about accidentaly discharge its there policy not to ship a gun out with the seal broke on the ajustments and i guess i can see there point. I was worried when i asked him the price. I though i was looking at at least 300 bucks in work but he told me 90 bucks and that included shipping. It would have cost that much to have a smith square the action! I know that alot of guys have had poor luck with there service dept., especially lately but theyve allways treated me top rate!

Hmmm.... I wonder what "square the action" means to Remington? If they take a cut on the face then it won't headspace properly nor will the writing on the barrel line up any more. Let us know what you find when you get it back!

well i got through to the gunsmith again after you got me thinking and he said he trued up the action and cut enough off the barrel that the writting lined up and ran a  reamer in it and then polished the chamber. Hard to say if they really did it or are just pulling my leg. Ive had ruger tell me they lapped my barrel and the gun came back with a differnt barrel on it. Its like they didnt want to admit that something they made was substandard. Id guess that it was just alot less work to replace a barrel then to lap one. Savage im retired and have all the time in the world to play with guns. I get a chance to shoot alot of deer and alot at long range and it would be pretty boring to me to use the same couple guns all the time. I cant really get the jist of your post but if its refering to the fact that the stw is a bit of an overkill ill say this. Theres a big differnce in going hunting with something like a 270 or 06 knowing that a 400 yard shot just might present itself then there is in going hunting where you know that shots under 250 will be rare and the norm is out past 300 and some will be closer to 500. Ill take all the gun i can get at those ranges.Sure a guy can rifle hunt with an 06 and take care of 99percent of everything in the world and do the same handgun hunting with a 44mag. But guns and hunting are my life. It would be pretty boring to limit myself. I think most here are gun and hunting nuts just like me and would agree.

Well, that would be the way to do it, now you get to see if your chamber is shiny or blued when you get it back. And as you said, I have had a really hard time getting a straight answer out of any rifle factory. Hopefully the new management at Remington is going to put them on the right track and get them to be more helpful than before.

well its back. I cant swear to it but im guessing its a new barrel theres not a mark on it. I hadnt had the gun long and never really checked the barrel that close so i cant swear either way. They installed there newest trigger and believe it or not it breaks at a clean crisp 2.5 lbs. they even shipped it in a brand new hard case. Shot a couple hot test rounds out of it out the back door and it isnt a bit sticky extracting anymore. Not bad for the 90 bucks they charged me!

Good to hear they fixed it for you. Can you tell if they took a cut on the receiver? If they did set back the barrel at all the proof marks should be cut in half or not there any more, since they are originally right next to the recoil lug.

the mark isnt cut in half so they either didnt cut it or put a new barrel on it. Im guessing its a new  barrel as I know theyve had problems with some of these stw with badly out of round chambers and that could very likely have been the trouble. The barrel on it now doesnt have a mark on it and the gun is over 10 years old and i know the guy i got it from had it in the field. Typicaly even me having it at the range a couple times theres going to be some marks on it and it does look like new and the odd thing is theres a few marks on the screw on muzzle break. To be honest i could care less what they did. It seems to work well now. It extracted some pretty hot loads like butter. I was conserned two about the trigger as it was a nice 2lb trigger but they went the extra mile and set this new one up just as good. Heck they even chucked the beat up old hard case i sent it in and gave me a brand new one for nothing. Ill give you this advice. remington tried to get me to sent it to one of there athourized service centers and i told them id rather have them do it and im sure glad i did so if you get in the same prediciment id insist on remington doing the work. they sure went the extra mile on this gun. .
