.223 Survivor My 1st H&R!!!
« on: April 24, 2012, 11:44:11 AM »
Hello everybody. I come to you from canadiangunnutz. I have purchased my first H&R and its a .223 survivor. Have been keeping my eye open for one in 223 for a while. They seem to be rare up in these  parts.

SO my question is - What now? I have heard about some things that should/may need to be done first. ((Trigger work and Bore polishing??)) If the seller is correct/ honest with me it has only seen 40 - 65 rounds of Winchester 45G white box.

Would love some input on this rifle and everybody's opinions and idea's!!

 Thanks everybody!!

First of all, shoot it.  Many of these rifles are fine right out of the box, and the 223 is normally very accurate.  So, I would'nt tinker unless necessary.  If it shoots good, and ejects or extracts correctly, just enjoy it.

If you do have problems, the FAQ's at the top of this forum page have a fix for just about any ill.

**revision**  Looks like Ben beat me to it, but here is the long winded version**** ;D

Before you do anything to the rifle, SHOOT IT!  The only way to see what it needs and how it fits your needs and shooting style is - SHOOT IT!  I see no need in tinkering with something that doesn't need it.  I got my first handi and it was a process for me.  I did not have the great support of GREYBEARDS back then to help me through it, but I found there wasn't much I needed to do to the rifle for it to shoot.  I shot about 100 rounds through it before I felt like I was competent with it, no fault of the rifle.

So my advice is - SHOOT IT!  CLEAN IT! ENJOY IT!  If it still needs something to make it your own or to fit what you want from it, somebody here can help you, but right now you don't know what you need or want!

When I got through those 100 rounds I found that whenever I cleaned the barrel with copper solvent, (something that I read in a magazine at the time, I already cleaned it after every range session just added the copper solvent) it no longer came out green, but mostly black with a little green.

I don't think it had as much to do with the accuracy as me learning the rifle and practicing shooting with it.

Congrats.  My .223 barrel (didn't buy the whole gun) hooked on my frame and started grouping .25" at 25 yards to about 3/8" at 50 yards and .5" at 100 yards.  Has done well with almost every load I've put through so far.  Thus far my .375" group with 55 gr. Nosler Ballistic tips has been the best long range.  Running it out at about 3015 fps.  If yours is a 1:9 and should be, you can go as high as 80 gr. solids typically.  If it ends up being a 1:12 twist it should still be ok up to about 60 gr. bullets.  8)  I've also done some 1200fps range hp rounds with unique powder and 46 gr. bullets.  Great squirrel rounds and don't do damage like full power ones would.  Designed for if I ever ran out of .22 LR but want ot reload some small game killers.  ;)

My first one last October was a 243 Thumbhole 24 inch Bull Barrel. I did put a different forend on it played with the trigger just a bit but otherwise left it as is. This gun will shoot lights out, crazy accurate !! I was very pleasantly surprised !

AJSP - First of all welcome to Handi-holics anonymous.

If you get a chance read "Handi Basics 101" in the sticky above.
Link: http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,116451.0.html

It will save you a lot of head scratching and questions.  My main piece of advice to you is to shoot it and enjoy it.  You can get around to the other stuff, (like trigger work) later on.

Caution owning Handi's is definitely addictive.

When you allow a lie to go unchallenged, it becomes the truth.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

flinthead - I am already planning a 22 mag with the iron sights and putting this survivor stock on, And getting new furniture from boyds for the 223.

OldSchoolRanger - I cruised the 101 and a bunch of the sub forms till my eyes hurt!

What have you guys got for groups out to around 300 yards??
