Does anyone use Shockey's gold powder
« on: March 31, 2012, 09:51:46 AM »
I'm fairly new to Muzzleloaders, bought my first one last sept and used it to take a nice 3x3 blacktail in Nov. I used Shockeys gold ffg, since thats what I got my dad when I bought him a kit gun the year before for CHRISTmas.

Before I went smokeless, I used Shockey's gold powder in my Knight Disc.  120grains.  Performed well for me.

I picked up a can last year to try, shoots good on the range I haven't used it in the field yet...

Used it for a couple of years and only had one problem. The grains don't want to flow out of my measures, you have to caox  them out.

I like to use American Pioneer Powder 3F in some of my guns which is basically the same powder. But I prefer the 3F because the grains of APP 2F are so large and chunky.
In some guns it may not matter too much, but my guns use #11 caps and I want to make sure that it has strong ignition.
It works good in revolvers and likes heavier compression to produce more velocity. And the smaller grains compress better.
Some folks complain that it soaks up moisture and can go bad but I've never had that problem.
I just keep the lid closed tightly and only open it up to load the flask for pre-measuring loads.
The less exposure to humidity the better.

It wasn't horrible, but I didn't like the very large chunks.  I got 3f and it was larger chunks than 1f.  Don't try to use it in cartridges in place of BP either.  Very inconsistent in that application.  In my rifle I had good luck accuracy wise, but had to clean a good bit.  Wasn't as bad as 777's crud ring though.  Now I'm back to using straight Goex 3F and liking that a lot more.  ;)
