  40 gr V-Max @ 1750 fps...   $25 per 50@

Why is it worth so much more money than the .22 mag ?

It seems like the performance is similar, perhaps even a bit better with the .22 mag and since it is primarily for an assault weapon, cases will not likely be saved.  It sure seems like the .22 mag could do the same job ...and do it cheaper..
...But I may be missing something.

Standard 5.7x28 out of a handgun equals a 22mag out of a 22"barrel. The 5.7x28 out of a 14" barrel with my past PS90 standard loads would give 2400fps with a 40 grainer. If you look into the millitary loadings of the 5.7x28 they are generating about 650ftlbs out of the 10" p90 barrels. If you take a 22mag and fire it out of a handgun barrel your getting pretty close to hyper velocity 22lr  out of a rifle. The downside to the 5.7x28 is getting the brass, it's only availible through FN. Any aftermarket loadings the company has to buy the factory ammo unload it to get the brass to do their own loads hance why it costs so much. With the 5.7x28 is kinda a pain to reload some say yuh have to keep the plastic/ lacquer coating on them in order to be reliable. At standard factory pressures I did a test and couldn't make that theory hold any water. I did a set of cases with no coating a set with half of it scraped off and another with all the laquer intact. I had no failures what so ever. That said I did not hot load them I just duplicated factory ballistics. If Savage ever gets going on their walking varminter in 5.7x28 and one of the mayjor ammo manufacturers start making loads I would most definetly buy one for woodchucking.

I haven't looked at the ballistics in a while, but if I remember correctly it gives Hornet performance in a rimless case.  Big deal!

OK I got that straight....sounds more like a Hornet-light ballistically, but the short case will work in a handgun type action.
As a civilian...I'll probably keep my Hornet; although the 5.7 may enjoy longer case life.
