Sick Coyote??
« on: January 29, 2004, 03:01:04 PM »
This morning on the way to work I spotted a funny looking coyote on a hillside.  Stopped the truck and the coyote didn't run off so I put the scope on him.  Over half of his(seen he was a male after I shot him) hind end was blackish in color.  At 197 yards(by the range finder) I touched off my .22 Hornet killing him in his tracks.  Got up to him and he had no hair to speak of in the dark area of his body.  Buried him where he fell.  I have seen coyotes with mange but never a problem like this.  Anyone ever see anything like this before?  Lawdog

I would say mange without the benefit of first-hand inpection. Another possibility is something we see here in NY in deer from time to time called dermatophilosis. Telltale signs are hair that can be pulled out in bunches.  This is caused by a protozoa whereas mange is the result of a mite infestation. BTW, dermatophilosis is very transmissible to humans.

gewehrfreund,

Thanks for the information.  I intend to look that up.  I carry around a shovel and a 50 lb. bag of lime just for such occasions.  I never touched that coyote, just dug a hole and shoved him in it, covered him with some lime and buried him.  Mange usually has a reddish color to it but this one didn't.  Just never seen one like this but I am going be watching.  Lawdog

we had a bunch of yotes with that parasite problem here a few years ago. it seemed like every second yote yu seen was missing some or all of his hair. some i killed were really bad looking. the really sick looking ones would kind of hang around like they were asking for euthenasia. it seems  to run in cycles. they will be really thick one year and then next year we got a bunch of sick ones. you never seen this problem years ago when people were trapping and hunting them more becuase the fur price was high.

trappenjoe,

I agree with you completely EXCEPT on one point.  The use of "cyanide guns "!  Too many other animals get killed along with coyotes when they are used.  Back when I was a pre-teen I lost five good dogs to cyanide guns.  These were dogs that I took with me for company while hunting.  Trapping is fine and I used to do it but I really dislike the use of cyanide guns.  Just a sore spot with me and nothing personal against you.  Lawdog

Hillbill yotes bring 25 low 45 high and the average is 40 $ .With all those cats hell I'd have sets all over they bring 150 to 300 now $$$$$$$$

Lawdog I anderstand yor point on the cyanide guns , they should never be used on public areas ,but in the ranching buziness we go after everything it's hard to explain , dogs running lose on a ranch do more bad
to calves and cows than yotes and bobcats combined . we have a real bad problem with wild dogs, people can't feed them anymore so they just turn them lose . I'd rather shoot the people than there dogs .It's a shame
they don't realize the efect on nature they cause by doing this..

trappenjoe,

I do understand the problems ranchers face with wild dogs and the pets that people let run loose.  These dogs take a heavy toll on stock and should be shot whenever caught running stock.  I grew up in just this kind of area.  What I am talking about is the indiscriminate use by these ranchers on public land(BLM) that borders their property.  They scatter these guns around, not only on their land but bordering land, which kill animals other than coyotes and dogs.  I have found bobcats, raccoons, etc. and even two Black Bear cubs that were killed by these guns.

Public land is where my dog(s) got into the cyanide guns.  When I lost my first dog to a cyanide gun I went on a vendetta and hunted cyanide guns.  Every one I found on public land I would trip and then smash with a hammer and leave it where I found it.  Maybe I was wrong for doing it but to an 11 year old that just watched his dog die a horrible death(and it IS a horrible death - watch an animal die because of being poisoned and there is nothing humane about it), it did make me feel somewhat better.

Many people would not believe the number of wild dogs running loose in farming areas.  Especially the areas where you find recreational sports like water skiing and such.  Summer residents move their families up to these areas and let them have a dog that they know they can't take home with them at the end of summer.  So what do they do is before they leave they drive out into the ranching areas and dump the dog where some nice rancher will give it a home.  As a teen I made money bounty hunting wild dogs, coyotes and whatever critter that was killing off stock.  In fact my first car(jeep CJ6) was paid for with the money I made bounty hunting.

Sorry for getting on my soapbox and I am not jumping you personally, it's just that cyanide guns brings up a very, very sore subject.  Please take no offence.  Lawdog
