Loading the 44 mag
« on: April 28, 2012, 02:14:31 PM »
Need feedback.  Just got my hands on a Taurus 44 mag 8.25" barrel.  Its been 20 years since I loaded for the 44.  What are your favorite powders, bullets, and loads.  Also anyone have experience with Missouri cast bullets ?

I use Missouri Bullets exclusively these days. I'm happy with their product and prices. It's been a few years since I've loaded for my .44 mag. My "Go To" powders have always been Unique and H 110, using published loads for my manuals.

Unique for playing, and Unique can be for more serious stuff too, then H110 or Lilgun for the real serious stuff.

Thanks for the info.  I already have H110 and Lil Gun for my 357mag so this makes it much easier on the pocket book.  Will have to try the Missouri cast, like to shoot, have a 20 and 80 yrd range in the back yard so I can get some practice with the new toy.  Pistol came with a scope but not sure thats what I want, have never used a scope on a pistol, always iron sights.  Thanks again.

Most every 44 mag I've owned will shoot a 240 ball over 24 grains of W-296/H-110 well .  Maye some better than others ....I also use 18 grains of 2400 under a 240 gr Oregon Trail cast .....good load , fairly easy to control.  Any load with W-296/H-110 requires mag primers , at least thats what the manuals say. Check your manuals against the mentioned loads.....a guy can have a brain fart.....and I have lots of em  ;D

good luck

I load for 5 different .44 Magnums and use a lot of Blue Dot. I also burn some Unique, 2400 and WC820 with lead bullets from 245 gr. to 265 gr. both plain based and gas checked. I don't use H110/W296 any more 'cause I don't do anymore T-Rex Killer loads and these powders have a relatively narrow  charge range. 99.5% of my loads comes from my published manuals...
