Best ammo for .223 Handi?
« on: April 15, 2012, 03:05:21 PM »
I'm going to be sending in my frame for a .223 22" standard barrel.  What is the best ammo (brand, type, or grain) for these barrels.  I have some Magtech 55gr fmj and some PPU 55gr softpoint left from my bolt action I traded off.  Is there a better weight or type of ammo for these barrels?  One of the main reasons I ask is becasue I got a gift certificate for ammotogo.com from my hunting club and have been making my wishlist.

what will the rifle be used for? Target, varmint, plinking etc? Ive had really good results with two different bulk ammos for fun target shooting. I handload most of the ammo for my 223 tho.

I plan on using it for varmint, but that is what I said about the bolt action and I think I took it out once or twice.  Mostly probably just plinking with occasional varmint.  Just something cheap to shoot at longer ranges.

Ive got some reloads but still buy factory ammo some times. Mine seems to like 40 and 45 grain bullets real well but will shoot good with anything up to a 55 grain. My barrel is an older 1:12 twist barrel though, a new one should be the 1:9 and will handle the heavier bullets a little better.

My favorite factory ammo is either hornady v-max or winchester makes a 40 round box of 45 grain jhp that I love but they are getting hard to find.

IIRC, Win. 'White Box' has come up repeatedly as the one that has shot well in most and is cheap too. I know if I got a 223 that is what I would try about first.

Winchester and Ultramax are the two brands that work well in my Ultra .223.  I stick with the 55gr or lighter bullets.

I also reload using all Winchester componets, with a Speer bullet.  Hodgdon gives the factory duplication load in their magazine size manual.  55gr Speer SP bullet, 26.3gr Winchester 748 powder, Winchester case, Winchester SR primer, giving 3150fps.  For 50gr Speer SP bullet, it's 26gr of 748 powder, same case and primer, giving 3200fps.  My H&R Ultra, my TCR, and my mini-14s all use these loads.

You owe it to yourself to try the Fiocchi 40 and 50 grain V-Max as well. Very accurate and cheap.

Winchester White box 45gr hollow points has cosistantly been mentioned in all the threads on this and it shoots the best in my 223 handi

I;ve been thinking of the 50 grain.  I should have picked some up at the gun show last month.  They had them for 25 a box of 50.  I picked up 3 boxes of PPU 55gr softpoints for 8.99 per 20 instead.

You need to shoot a hundred rounds to break it in anyway; consider it 'getting familiar with each other'. Dont get freaked by wide groups right away, but be thrilled if/when they happen.
