Epoxy bedding compounds

Anybody out there ever used a hardware store epoxy auto body repair compound for glass bedding and how did it go? Was looking at a couple of different brands and they are way less than 1/2 the cost of Acra-Glas Gel. Thanks-Muddy

Ive used Devcon steel putty. It worked pretty good, 6 bucks, pretty cheap too

Auto body filler is polyester resin and talc filler.  It will work but epoxy is higher in strength.  I have used Devcon and JB Weld for stock bedding.

I use J-B Weld when bedding rifles.

I use J-B Weld.  Get some Kiwi neutral shoe polish for a release agent.  Coat the metal well.

Yup - good stuff!
MarineTex or Devcon Steel - Putty or Liquid.  If you want to show off your inletting in wood - Acraglas, not gel.  2 coats of Johnsons paste wax applied and buffed of as a release agent.

I would be careful of which epoxy you select, a lot of the epoxy out there would not work well for bedding due to being too soft or shrinkage.  A lot of guys use JB, although it's a bit runny imo and makes more of a mess than when using something like Devcon or MarineTex Putty.  I just pillar-bedded my mountain rifle using Devcon Stainless Steel putty and it turned out perfect.

I've used all the above and still prefer AcraGlass and usually the jel. It is harder than body putty but not so hard as to shatter under impact.

i like the devcon and i use pam cooking spray as my release agent
