Where to find golf ball and soda can mortar plans?
« on: April 29, 2012, 01:32:44 PM »
I've been looking for plans to build a golf ball and a soda can mortar without much luck.

Where should I look for detailed construction plans?

What style are you looking for?

Simple styles are easy, historically accurate patterned after "something" takes a bit more.

Did you check the References: Cannon FAQ's, Posting Picture Books, the web, and Cannon Plans sticky.  There is ten years worth of links to cannon plans in there.

Yes sir, I started there a week ago:
Golf Ball Coehorn, first post:  No plans, photos missing or invalid links
Golf Ball Coehorn, second post:  No plans, no photos.
Golf Ball Coehorn, third post:  Promising link to a plan, but link is invalid, no photos.
Bowling Ball Morter, one post:  No plans but some cool photos.
Soda Can Coehorn, one post: Invalid link to mortar plans in post 6

I did glean the following:
A golf ball gun with proper windage would need a minimum bore of 1.723 inch.
The diameter of a golf ball is 1.68 inch. .  (1.68/39)x40=1.723
http://www.learnaboutgolf.com/beginner/balltypes.html

A popcan mortar with proper windage needs a bore of 2.667.
A Diet Coke can is 2.6 inches in diameter.  (2.6/39)x40=2.667

Bore size should be diameter of perspective projectile, divide diameter by 39, multiply result by 40.

Powder charge should not exceed 2 oz. of Fg or 3 oz. FFA or Cannon Grade Goex powder per inch of bore diameter.  No excessive charges, use black powder only.

Most of those are pretty old posts; some go back to 2005.  geocities is long gone and many of the "free" sites won't host files that long.  This link from this thread is still active.

The following threads detail two of the "contest" golf ball mortars:
http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,71351.0.html
http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,70859.0.html

There were two other contestants but their images are gone.  If those posters are still around and have the images, I can host them on my site and will rebuild the links in their threads.

This thread has three image links at the bottom for a Coehorn mortar.  Some drawings in this thread also.  And in this thread too.

I thought the group buy post had barrel drawings.  Just checked only the base drawings in the post.  Fixed that and have now added the barrel drawings Group buy-group pour, bronze 24 PDR Coehorn golf ball mortar

By the way when you run into those old post with broken links, just send the poster a PM or email and ask for their plans.  If they still have them they might share. you might also bring them back into the fold.

You can scale up any of the Golf ball dimensions to get the dimensions for a popcan mortar.  Just multiply the dimensions by 1.547619047619048... 1.55 is good enough just make the bore 2.654 for correct windage.

I'll dig through my AutoCAD drawings and see what I still have.

I don't think this one has been mentioned, but here's plans for a golfball 10" seacoast mortar: http://gunneyg.info/images/M1844TenInchSeacoastGBMortar.gif
