Stepped in poo at the gun show today.......
« on: April 28, 2012, 04:02:51 PM »
.........and came out smelling like a rose.  There wasn't much there.  The usual over priced stuff.  I did pick up a brand new bag of 50 each of .356 and .358 Win. brass for 30 bucks a bag.  The same guy had 3 boxes of .32 rimfire ammo that someone I know, but can't remember, needs (CRS).  We were leaving and a guy's checking in with a Handi.  Anyhow, I bought it.  .22-250 on a pretty pallet wood stock in like new condition, NV, 2004 SN, Weaver 82 base and a Tasco Euro-Class 3-12 X 52, 30mm tube. 250 bucks.  I figured maybe 40 bucks for the scope, ten for the rings makes it 200 bucks.  Not too bad.

I got home and did some research on the scope.  It turns out the Euro-Class was made in Japan and is the finest scope Tasco ever made.  They're selling now for 175 to 225 used.  It is super bright and clear.  It sits way too far forward on the 82 base, so I'll either notch the base or replace it.  I never buy the 82 for that reason.

nice pickup pete! I agree about the 82 base. I too went to a gun show today and it was probably the worst one ive ever been too. One handi there, a 204 with a painted pallet wood stock for 350! I did pick up 50 pcs of 45-70 starline brass for 22$ Keep us up to date on how she shoots.

Great snag Pete, congratulations. The gun is nice but the scope made the deal MUCH better....<><....:)

Congrats Pete, I've had a Tasco Euro-Class 5-20x40 30mm on my 223 Ultra for many years, bought it on ebay a long time ago for $175, it's an awesome scope!!  ;)

Tim, it's a funny thing.  The guy went to the first table and showed the dealer the rifle.  He pulled out his book and after a moment shook his head.  The fellow turned away and that's when I asked to look at it.  The young man behind the table only saw the rifle and "Tasco" and was probably thinking the same 40 bucks I was.  I almost feel guilty :-[

pete-

which base should a guy use with the bigger scopes?  I have just gotten a 22-250 barrel, awaiting funds for a new scope. all my other Handi's have 4x or 1.5-5x scopes.
thanks for the help...
God Bless ya'll

Greg, I'm really not the guy to ask.  I normally use the H&R base that comes on the rifle.  Tim, CW, etc. etc. know lots more about it than I do.  Read through "Scope Bases" in the FAQ's. You have to page down quite a way for it.  There's a lot of good dope there.  I stay away from the Weaver #82 because it only has two sets of grooves cut in it and they invariably never fit the scope to give you the eye relief needed, so you have to cut at least one more set.

Pete,
Check out this video on U tube it will give you an idea of what the CHeetah will do. These guys are using a 22-243 instead of the Cheetah. To be real honest the 22-243 is a lot easier to make the cases for and Might only give up 50 fps in velocity.

Pete , thats exactly why I use the 82 base , I can cut any groove in it that I need and taylor it to any scope that I have for a given rifle .  :)

I too went to a gun show yesterday.  Bought a .22mag/20ga Savage 24.  Almost bought a .22LR/20ga as well, but felt one was enough for the day.  Really looking for a .308/12ga, but those are rare and go fast.  Did see a double over and under 30-06.  I know the dealer,(my gunsmith) I will be checking it out in a month or so if he still has it.

Not a Handi in the entire show.  Only saw two H&R shotguns.  Lots of ARs, but mostly the average bolt and lever guns for hunting.  And about 1/4 old military arms.  Several M1 Garands and M1 Carbines.

Was really surprised by the number of original WWII vintage Colt 1911s.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
