Getting a rifle weighed?
« on: February 02, 2004, 09:19:05 AM »
So far I've only shot at a club where they don't check the weight of the rifles. I plan on getting to matches at other clubs and i'm wanting know how to get my rifle weighed and certified. If I go to a match at the St Louis Benchrest club will they weigh and certify it there?  LouisV

Weighing your gun

Before I got an accurate digital scale, I used to have my guns weighed at the grocery store.  Their scales are very accurate.  Talk to your grocer.   As far as certifying them, that is up to the match director.  Some weigh, some do not.  I don't think certification will transfer from one shoot to another.

other than registered matches, state, regional, and national championships, i have never had a rifle weighed.   not true...  once when the folks at a local match in northern california were looking for a reason to disqualify me.  they weren't pleased that an outsider came in and beat their local champion.  other than that never.  do you guys weigh for sanctioned matches as well?

Weighing guns

Most of the guys shoot the same gun time after time, so there is no need to weigh it each time. I bring the scale along to most matches.  If a newcomer brings a gun that looks suspiciouis, I will weigh it.    Our matches are approved matches, and I suppose we should be weighing them each time, but as is usually the case, there is never enough manpower around.

Along with the information already posted, a point or two from someone who's often stuck with running tech:

Scales vary and so do wood-stocked rifles.
At least an oz or two under on weight in either gun and an oz or two over on hunter triggers is never a bad idea.

Before registered matches, or in case of any disagreement, we confirm our club scale with weights that have been previously checked on a post office scale. Hard to argue against that...

St. Louis Silhouette matches
« Reply #5 on: February 02, 2004, 11:46:37 AM »
The gentleman that runs the highpower silhouette matches at St. Louis is Mr. Bob Ciuffa.  I attend matches there fairly frequently and the only times that they have weighed guns is during the regional matches that they have held.  They don't typically weigh guns for their usual monthly matches.  However if you show up with an extremely overweight gun, you might tell them about it.  I am fairly sure that they will let you shoot and nobody will say a thing about it.  If it is only one or two ounces over, don't worry about it.  Everyone there is pretty casual about stuff as long as you aren't being too crazy.  Tommy Todd and some other guys from Sierra Bullets shoot up there fairly often so you might talk to him about the matches.

Thanks for the responses, I began to think it was a silly question after I posted it. I'll check around town and see if someone can weigh it for me just to make sure it's not over weight for now. Thanks again, LouisV

Not a silly Question at all! For my first hi-power match I hastily put together a new off the rack Tikka synthetic w/ Tikka mounts and a 6 x 24 B & L scope. To my surprise at the weigh in IT WAS OVER! After removing sunshade, dust covers, swivel screws, copper fouling the officials let it go. That was a surprise I did not need 600 miles from home. I'm glad I didn't have to break out the hack saw and drill.
