Remington 700 Classic 257 Roberts

:)  Well you never know what your going to find when you look in the used gun rack.  I was a local Gander Mountain and was in process of looking over the various used rifles when came across a "Used" 700 Classic in 257 Roberts.

A couple of years ago I became familiar with the Classic line from Remington and have wanted one for some time.  I ended up buying a 300 Savage Classic last year.   But there were two of the older models I wanted...257 Robert and 6.5 x 55.  And there it was.  The guy behind the counter said it was an older gentleman that was loosing his site and couldn't hold onto his collection.  Brought in 31 rifles and sold them all.  Makes me want to cry, poor guy!

Did I mention if I put the two down and had someone mix them up I'd have a very hard time figuring out which one was a year old and which one was 22 years old.  This thing has never had a scope and wasn't fired, heck it even came with the original box.   :P   What a find.  Once in a lifetime find.   Thanks for reading...just had to say something.

My wife once made the mistake of telling me "all of your guns look alike"...No, I've had this gun for a long time! LOL

Congrats on the .257!

I picked up a used Ruger .257 Roberts last January and immediately fell in love.  Am shooting Barnes 115f TSX (Triple Shock) bullets over H4831SC (48g/2958fps) and H4350 (44.5g/3013fps), as well as Hornady 75g VMAX over H4895 (46.0g/3609fps).  WW brass and CCI 250 primers with all.  These are +P loads but very accurate.

Not a lot of recoil but serious enough for deer.  And the Ruger is a 22" barrel - light and easy to carry.  Gotta love it!

Josh,

I am happy to hear that another .257 Roberts fan is in the making! I had a custom .257 Roberts built on an FN Mauser action back in '54 - just before I joined the Navy. I didn't get to do much with it until about 10 years later, but I made up for lost time. It was my number 1 woodchuck killer here in North Jersey back in the '60s and '70s (until I bought a .220 Swift).

I still have that .257 today and its 50 years young. The .257 should never have been pushed aside by the .243 Win and 6mm Rem. Although they are both good cartridges, the .257 Roberts is still the king in my books.

(I just added a second .25 caliber rifle to my gun cabinet yesterday. I bought a Winchester M70 Coyote in .25 WSSM - but I won't let it upstage my .257 Roberts)

Good luck with your Remington Classic - I am also a big fan of the Model 700 Remington, as well as the Model 77 Ruger ( I have some of them in my gun cabinet too.)

What a sweet round and a nice combo. I've been eyeing the Ruger in the Roberts chambering for some time but need to get a new cabinet to open up some new space.

I inherited a bunch of the Classics from my father. The 257 has shown to be a decent grouper with several different bullets but I cant get the Barnes bullets to shoot nearly as well in that rifle.
I think the little 6.5X55 is my favorite of the Classics but admittedly doesn't shoot as well with what I've tried.

My brother swears by his 35 Whelan for elk.
