.45 colt load in the 1100-1150 fps range?
« on: May 02, 2012, 03:31:48 AM »
I have a new model blackhawk 4 5/8 and looking to get a load hotter than standard but not 44 mag level. All the load data I find are just that (standard or Mag level), I'm wanting to use 250gr xtp. Anyone have any info or recommendations? I load for 41 mag and use H110 but I dont know if it would be safe trying to load down to 1100 in 45 starting loads show 1300. Thoughts?

I was using 12.0 to 14.0 grains Blue Dot under the 250 XTP in my .45 Colt Blackhawk 7.5" to get about that velocity.  I turned the Blackhawk into a .308 Encore.  Wow, what a difference!

Anytime I want load data for an unlisted load I contact the powder manufacturer. I know for a fact both Accurate and Alliant have ballisticians on staff, I can't believe the other powder makers don't.
That would be your best bet.

20.0 gr of H4227 pushes this bullet at about 1150 fps. This is a starting load.

I'm using 20.5 grains of 2400 under a 250 XTP/HP with WLP primers.  Its giving me an average of 1190 fps from a 7 1/2 " Ruger Super Redhawk 454.  This is a great load for deer.

This is Hodgdon's load for H110.  I've used it with good results at the minimum levels in my Ruger Blackhawk with a 5.5" barrel.  I personally prefer using the 300 gr. XTP Magnum because I did have a number of the 250 gr. std. XTP's desintegrate prematurely.  I use 21.5 gr. with the bigger bullet.

using H110 at loads below 3% of max is dangerous and can cause sudden pressure spikes.  That is why the range is so limited.  You may know this, but I felt I should probably add it in.

About 14.5 to 15 gr of Hodgdon HS6 should get you about 1100 to 1150 fps.
I use 12.5 gr in my custom 5" Blackhawk for about 1050 fps.
