BB standing tomorrow
« on: July 13, 2012, 01:13:07 AM »
Going to shoot the 7mm TCU with paper patched bullets again tomorrow. If you don't hang on to that thing it will give you a fat lip!  ;D

No busted lips today!

The big one and the little one stayed home, but Erin and I got to shoot. They all say "HI!"

She shot the 30-30 rifle and got a 29, I snuck past her by one point with a 30 to win the rifle match with the 38-55 shooting smokeless powder and paper patched bullets this time. I got a 20 with the 7mm TCU pistol, a little better than last month also with paper patch and no blood shed at all.

We had three pistol shooters this time, two 30-30s and me with the TCU. That was fun since one of the guys shooting the 30-30 was next to me in the same relay so we went pretty much neck and neck the whole time, I ended up edging him by 2 points I think.

This heat is hard on the guns and the shooters, we all had to wear gloves to be able to hold onto the guns during the second string. You sure don't want to show up with anything close to maximum loads or you'll not be able to get the gun open once it gets really hot.

I brought my 416 Taylor out for folks to play with after the match and to test some somewhat reduced loads. They all seemed to have fun shooting that, usually only once, and seeing how fast a ram will fall after it's hit with 350 gr. of lead with a muzzle velocity of 2550 fps. They go straight back and almost get buried in the berm!

So, all in all a great fun day of shooting and socializing.

I'm glad to hear the 30-20 is working out for you, and look forward to a full report after you get to shoot it next week. If it's really hot where you'll be shooting do watch the pressures on that little cartridge and have a rod with a brush on it handy in case it breaks any in half. Have fun!

ok my  1st ever  BB standing open sight  is in the books
the little 32-20 held it's own with the big bad rams, turkeys , pigs and chicks knocking some of all
to the ground  the count was 17

I was very please  being that
this was only my second time ever to shoot 150 and 200 yrds. standing  practice or match
1st. time ever shooting  150 and 200 yrds. with open sights practice or match
1st. time ever to shoot the 32-20 in a match
1st time ever to adjust sights for each distance in a match
1st. time ever to use different loads in a match
150 and 200yrds sight settings based on bullet data /ballistic cal
 I think 8 clicks =7.68 high @ 50yds. which = 6.50 high 150 yrds. for 6 o'clock hold
14 clicks = 11.77 high @ 50 YRDS = @200 YRDS 7.68 HIGH FOR 6 O'clock hold

bottom line even with out all the 1st stuff   happen with the 32-20 and the 17 ;D

Way to go! It's good to hear the 30-20 worked for you, those are just so nice to shoot aren't they? Most people wouldn't believe it has enough hit to take the rams with so little recoil, but it does work. What bullet and load were you using? Did you shoot the same thing all the way through or have a special ram load?

You now have the ultimate all purpose Contender barrel, field/hunters pistol on up to big bore with one gun. Nice!

short story made long  :D

one of the reasons I bought this barrel was 30 years ago I bought  a bulk buy of 500 30 cal.
130 hp and 500 30 cal 110 round nose of which I still had most.

as most in this sport know and I'm learning  your shooting heaver than norm bullets in sometime
oddball / wildcat cartridges very little load data
which was the case for the 32-20 with heaver than 110gr. talking to a few people that shoot/shot the 32-20 using the taco hold I found that 165gr. @ about 1150mv was min. for a dependable ram load.
Digging in my reloading stuff I found about 30 165gr. hp bt and about the same in 180gr. spire point
also found that 4227 and 2400 powder was a common choice.
after testing I found 2400 give a little higher MV. with a lower charge and a little less recoil and in my case a little better accuracy using the same charge with the 110,130 165 and the 180's
now to your ?
I don't list unpublished load data but all with the same  safe charge of 2400

50 chicks          110gr.  @ 1320mv.
100 pigs           130gr.  @ 1240mv.
150 turkeys      130gr.  @ 1240mv.
200 rams          165gr.  @ 1169mv.

I also shot this gun in freestyle  production
and shot the 180gr. @ rams what is some what interesting is with same  charge the mv. of the 180gr. was a little more than the 165. and you could tell the difference in the sound of the hits
and I think the 180 will become my rams load  ;D and when the 110 and 130 are gone
I thinking 130 or 150 for every thing else

That ought to do the trick!

Years ago I used a 32 H&R mag for IHMSA big bore freestyle. RCBS 165 SIL through turkeys and a huge 220gr. Lyman that I can't remember the number of for rams. That 220 isn't even supersonic but would drop the rams no problem. Powder was WC680, basically same as Accurate #1680. Momentum is surely your friend when it comes to knocking over silhouettes.

Congrats again, keep us posted on the progress!
