Winchester model 100

 I finally got my hands on a reasonably priced post 64 model 100 in .308 the other day. It has'nt had recall work done yet but I've been assured that the new firing pin is in the mail.  I stripped her down lastnite and cleaned every square inch. As sooon as the f.p. shows up I'll do some shoosting but until then she'll happily sit next to her cousin model 88.

The firing pin finally came in the mail today and I just finished installing it  ;D ;D
I got some loads that I made up for my 88 that I'd like to in my 100 this Sunday aslong as weather permits.
I'll post pics  ;)

Whatever problems these rifles had, the style and overall dimension for an auto banger or lever rifle are right on IMO. A pity that Winchester stopped making or updating them . :(

Really the 88 was like a bolt action only operated by a lever.  :o  I think the 88 was one of Winchesters better ideas. But alas expensive to mfg. and hard to get a good trigger on.  ;)  They were both lost as Winchester sought cost saving measures in the 60's. Instead of continueing to make better guns winchester chose to mfg. to a price point. Wrong decision in my opinion.

I recently acquired my father's Winchester Model 100 in .243 Win.  It's topped with a Japanese Tasco 3-9x40.  The firing pin has been replaced, and it shoots well.  I like it a lot.

I had one back in the 70's and everytime I went to shoot it I would break a firing pin.  Of course I was young and had not learned a lot about gunsmithing.  I sold it for a bolt action.  I think firing pins were the weakness of these rifles.  They are nice, but you do want it to go bang.  I don't really like the funky magazines on the Remington autos.  I have an L1A1 now, no problems I got for $400 several years ago.

 I had one (notice,past tense!)  It was one, heavy, beast.   Lousy shooter.   Very disappointed.   Sold it to my brother......... ;D

Who did you get the firing pin and bushing guide from?  When I called New line they wanted me to send either the old pin and bushing or the entire rifle first.... then if I only sent the pin they'd mail me another.  Didn't want to take a chance on waiting forever in either case so I didn't do either.  I'd like to swap it out, but not sending the rifle anywhere.  It's only about a 20 minute job...

I planned on using my dad's 243 this deer season.  I bought a box of shells and began to sight in the scope.  Groups are not stellar... and it fails to eject.  I broke it all the way down and cleaned it really well.  Still fails to eject.   :(

I picked up my Winchester 100 from the gunsmith on Friday. The fail to eject issue was two fold. Lightly rusted chamber and the entire extractor assembly was missing. Apparently the rusty chamber made it hard to extract and the assembly gave out. $115 parts/labor and everything is tip top.  It's not a target rifle, but a good hunting rifle.

The firing pin was sent to me by the seller, so I don't know where he got it, sorry.
As for shooting, I tried some 150gr Noslers and 42.5gr Varget. This rifle fired flawlessly and gave me an easy 1.75" group at 100 yards. To me this is "minute of deer" I installed an older Bushnell fixed 6x scope on her.

Conditions equal,I would trade.My first c-fire auto was an M100. It had a bad habit of loosening the mounts after about a box of shells was run through it. Not much thread purchase,no loctite.Traded it on a BAR and haven't looked back. That '64 is more desirable than most '94s.Good luck!

have had 2 model 100,s over the years
a post 64 when i was stationed at ft carson in the mid 80,s
and a pre 64 with a jeweled bolt that someone had done on it
both 308
 
wish i never sold either of them
both of them were 95-97%condition guns that i bought from private parties
paid 375 for the one in colorado in 1984
paid 450 for the pre 64 in 1995
the prices for them on gunbroker and gunamerica are sky high
and i get a kick out of what some people classify % wise what their guns condition is

Excuse the poor quality of the pics, they were exposed to the light too long but just posting to say M100s don't take to heavy loads well.  This shooter lost parts of two fingers. Rifle was totally destroyed. I gathered up all the parts and piled them on the shooting bench. The barrel was about 10 yds. in front of the bench. never did find out what he was shooting but he was an experienced shooter and reloader. he was taken to the hospital and i never saw him again.
 This was a .308 win. M 100. H08

Those scrap pictures of the M100 is what my brothers looked like. Was a broken fireing pin determined by independant gun smiths who had the chance to look it over. Brother got burnt in the groin area badly and one of the parts went thru the top of his boot thru his foot and out the sole of the boot.
Scared the shilths out of me so I got rid of mine. Never want to see another one either.

That's a good example of a worst case scenary with a broken firing pin.. The replacement cures the problem as I've not seen any those broken..so far at least.. These are very strong rifles but have some unique accuracy issues.. The BAR is a great autoloader, some are a little scarey..in the accuracy part.. Had one, a 7mmRemMag with the brake that shot a factory loaded well under 1/2 inch from an expediant rest. The owner wanted to know if I would do any work on the trigger.. I just told him to locate and buy as much ammo of that lot as he could and just hunt..
