Got my Uberti Richard's Conversion - now with Pic!
« on: March 16, 2012, 06:44:41 AM »
Thanks CJoe!   ;)

The first thing I noticed when picked it up was the heavy or bulky feeling.  More like a SAA then a sleek Army or Navy.  A quick check with my caliper confirmed that the cylinder is indeed larger.  I guess I knew that or at least suspected it from discussions here.   :-\

But I've wanted one for a long time so I'm happy!   ;D

I was going to shoot it yesterday, but when I got to the range I found I had left my bag of 38's at home.   ::)  I hate being senile...  :'(

The cylinder is plenty long enough for the Spl., but I was thinking about shooting 38 S&W's in it.  Anybody ever try that?

38S&W brass should not fit as the diameter ahead of the rim is bigger than 38Spl by SAMMI spec

Since you neglected to add a picture, I will add one for you.  Here is a Richards Conversion of the 1860 Colt, chambered for the 44 Colt cartridge.

Please post some pics and a range report, and congratulations on a fun and beutiful handgun. They combine the looks of the front stuffers with the ease of the cartridge world. Gotta love em.

The modern 38 long colt is the closest you can get to the original 38 long rimfire of the originals and is all Ive shot in mine. You might give them a try.

Hello, AtlLaw.  I'm confused..what is the chambering of your Uberti Richards conversion..I have always heard these were .38 spec.?
If yours is indeed a .38 long-colt, and so bored..you would need either a heeled or hollow-base bullet.  I use a H.B. bullet in my Kirst conversion cyl. in .38 long-colt, I have installed in a 1972 era Colt re-make 1851 .36.

Since you neglected to add a picture,

Geeeze!   ::)  A guy gets no slack around this group!   ;D  I'll take one ASAP!

38S&W brass should not fit

I'm confused..

Shoot, at my age I stay thataway anymore...  :(

I thought sure the markings on the barrel said 38 Spl. or 38 S&W but after reading Wiley's post I went back and looked.  It says 38 Spl., but the or was indeed 38 Colt.  :-[  I had 2 pieces of 38 S&W laying around so I tried them just for grins.  One fit, the other didn't.  Who cares, turns out I have a LOT more 38 Spl. Brass then I thought I did!   ;D

I slugged the bore and one chamber throat last night.  The bore is .3583 and the throat I slugged was just a couple of ten thousandths over that.  Shoots rubber bullets real good in my basement range.  Can't wait to see what it does with cast!   ;)

Hope yours does as well as mine at the range. But when you post those pictures, post them with some of that nice leather you have been working on. That conversion should have a place of honor in a nice tooled slim jim!

That's because you got a .357 hole instead of a .430 hole in the barrel

I finally remembered to take a picture!   ::)   Kind of fun actually, trying to make a good looking photo.  I may have to try more of that.   :-\

Anyway, here she is.  The group is a 10 yard, rubber bullet group I shot real quick without really being able to see the sights.  The ammo is some I've loaded but haven't had a chance to shoot yet.  4 gr. of Unique under 158gr SWC.

I'm gonna try another pic with some back lighting and this revolver along with my 51 Navy like Timothy did!   ;D

Heck, it'd been so long I had to reread the OP to remember what the picture was supposed to be!  Nice looking revolver.  When you going to order the second one to balance out your walk?

Looking to the Uberti catalog I think the exact model of this revolver should be "Richards Mason Navy 1851", 38 special caliber and 5 1/2 barrel.

The "Richards Navy 1851" doesn't have the cases extractor on the side of the barrell and it only comes with 7 1/2 barrel

The "Richards Navy 1851" is the gun used from the man with no name, in the Sergio Leone western movies.

Uberti catalog can be downloaded from here:

Ah so... very true my friend.   :D

Once again, you are absolutely correct.  And exactness is a virtue!  So I must go back and correct this gross error I have perpetrated upon this forum!   :-[  I confess!  Mia Culpa, mia culpa, mia maxima culpa (that's a Catholic thing...) Here's the truth:  My handgun was only manufactured by Uberti!
It was actually marketed by    Taylor's & Company
as their 1871 C. Mason Revolver - Navy Style!  Their catalog can be seen here:
http://www.taylorsfirearmsstore.com/1871_mason.htm BTW, I believe the revolver shown is the "Army" style, hence the round barrel.

I swear fellers, There was no intent on my part to mislead anyone!  I just thought everyone here would be familiar enough with the words used, i.e. Navy vs Army for me to take a little descriptive license!   :-\

Which reminds me, I got to post another pic with this revolver and my '51 Navy side by side...

OH!! welcome to GBO and the forum BD!   ;D  and now it's your turn!   ;)

Oh you're right, I should post more  :P

A few days ago I watched "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" for the 1000th time...then I started looking around for a replica of the gun used in the movie. Clint's character Blondie was using a Colt 1851 Navy .36 revolver that had been converted to fire metallic cartridges.  Technically, such a gun didn't exist (from a manufacturer, anyway) at the time the movie is set. But using guns with metalling cartridges would speed up movie action and make it easier to find guns for the movie. Uberti supplied the guns as replicas.

Here's the Colt 1851 Navy revolver with a loading gate cartridge conversion kit

Ya know, I saw either "A Fistfull of Dollars" or "A few Dollars More," can't remember which, in some movie theater in 1965 somewhere in Texas where I was stationed going through flight school.  And I've also seen it a few times since then!   ;D  Point is, I coulda sworn he used a P 73...  :-\

I know I'm wrong, I've heard others here say that it was the '51 conversion, but I just don't remember seeing it that way!  I'm gonna have to watch those old movies again just to figure out an excuse for my being so unobservant!   :-[

BD, I really appreciate your posting the link to the Uberti catalog PDF!  I looked through it and there is a lot of stuff in there that isn't on the Uberti web site!   :o

Now, if you're still in Itali, maybe we could get you to run over to the factory and be our source man for some (non-firearm) parts!   ;)    ;D
