Winger Ed's Winter Project 2012

About 12 years ago I bought this 2" bore cannon, in need of a full overhaul.
The barrel & hardware needed to be repainted, and the carriage & wheels were in really rough shape.
 
I finally ordered the wood, the wheels, a few odds & ends, and got it finished.
Well, almost finished. I'm not really happy with the trunnion straps, and I need to enclose the Steel axle
in a wooden 'box' to make it look a little more historically correct.
Its done with Amish wheels and white oak lumber from a mill in the Carolinas. 
 

 
 

 
 
The pictures don't really do justice to the finish on the wood and the wheels.
After sanding, its stained with Minwax provincial, then rubbed several times with teak oil-
and it came out really nice looking.

Winger Ed,

I also think that you did a great job refurbishing the barrel and rebuilding the carriage, so I hope you don't mind one bit of constructive criticism (I wouldn't even mention it unless it was something that could be easily remedied). The two pieces of hardware on top and near the end of the trail are called pointing rings (large and small), and their correct positions are reversed, they're also backwards. A wood pole called a hand spike goes through the rings so that it is angled upwards pointing away from the trail, and it's used by artillerymen to traverse the piece left or right when aiming.

I'll fix the 2 pieces.
I put it back the way the original carriage was done....
but didn't have a clue as to what they are, or how they are supposed to be mounted.
Also, I'm not totally happy with the trunnion caps.
I've been scratching my head over whether to make new ones,
or put a piece of leather under the trunnions to tighten up the slack in them.
 
At work & home I'm busier than a cat in the sandbox right now, so no firing pictures for a bit.

(The guy I got it from, who looked about 70, had recently retired, and moved to a community North of Dallas.
I answered a add in the paper,,,, went to his approx $1 million house-
that wasn't even old enough for the grass on the yard to be established.
But the concrete driveway was dried enough to support a new, 4 door, Mercedes-
wearing a paper Dealer license plate and also, a beautiful, Jaguar(sp) sedan.
At around 6 in the afternoon,,, he came out to meet me wearing a suit worth more than my truck.)

 Anyway,,, the point I was getting to:
It doesen't matter if it was built by craftsmen who'd been welding for their 'day job'
35 years or more, using equipment that- when ya pulled the trigger or drew a arc with it-
all the lights in the city went dim,,,,,,,,, and they built it for the 'boss'........
Its still a 'bubba barrel', with a trailer hitch ball glued on the back..
 

In the future,, ya need to watch out.
If you're not careful, the villagers will come after you with torches and pitchforks--
just like they did the Frankenstien monster,,, (and me on several occasions.)
