Plinking is my number one reason for shooting. Hunting is just an excuse to get into the woods.
As for short barrel calibers, as mentioned any of the pistol calibers. There are also "more interesting" calibers that would perform well in short barrels like the Herretts, Hornets and others. Even my 10" 223 is good if you take measures to minimize muzzle blast such as hand loading light bullets and using powders that are on the fast side.
