.35 to .375 Woodleigh reviews anyone?
« on: December 07, 2011, 05:09:40 AM »
I have a great 310gr Woodleigh Weldcore load out of my 35 Whelen Ackley Improved I want to use on something. Here in Utah, I keep waiting for the rogue Circus elephant with no luck , ha. I have used the Barnes x bullets ( from 250 to 200) on many South African plains game animals, from Zebra to Hartebeest, and really like them. However, I am planning a Russian Boar hunt in the Spring up in Michigan, and want to use this 310 Woodleigh. I will be shooting a 300+ pound boar, and want to break him down with a shoulder/heart/lung shot at less than 120 yards. As a young man in Texas, I have shot many feral hogs behind the ear with a .22 magnum, and I don't "need to", but I want to use my "old friend" Mod 700 Classic. I just want to use an Old School heavy softnose. I don't know anyone around here who uses Woodleighs. I have shot them in .358win to .375 H&H with great accuracy, but never took a game animal with them, always fell back to the Barnes X. I have not clocked this load of 55gr R15, but "assume" it's anywhere from 2200- to 2350fps.
Anyone ever used a similar 300 to 300+ gr Woodleigh in a .350 Rigby Mag, .375 or 9.3x62 on similar sized game? Did they open up OK or act like a solid? Any opinions welcomed. Thanks guys.

Didn't get the big boar, but a nice fat sow. 30yds, bullet opened up perfectly, blew lung tissue 30ft out the other side! No bloodshot meat; typical medium caliber perfection! I will use this load more around here, just for grins. I get an honest 2400fps via chrono, and it stablilized just fine out of this Remington 1 in 16" twist. I was concerned it wouldn't open up or that it would tumble when it hit due to the Remington twist rate...like all worries, my concerns were a waste of energy, ha. Love these Woodleighs!

RJ- Mine is a 9x57 (true as it is a 8x57 mod. 98 rebored to .350 bore and .3580 grove) I haven't used it on anything other than a coyote and a Whity doe w/ 200gr, RCBS cast Hp at about 1800 fps. They both died on the spot. I'm hoping to get drawn for a moose tag this fall (I have 16 pts, about 22 years trying! and the average is 11 pts.) What I would use is the Hornady 250 gr RNSP at about 2300 fps. There are lotsa' of them around here (NE WA) so all I need is a tag! I don't have access to a bigger mold or the bigger J bullet but I figger the Horn. will do it if I use that. I also have 338/06-308- 3-7x57's- 3-30/06's, 270, 260, 8x57, 25-06, 375 Ackley, 45-70 ect. Probably could also use my 6mm/swift w/100 gr Nosler PT also. The one I did shoot when in high school was w/a mod. 88 Winny. and 180 gr. ptd Core-Lokt-1 shot 1 Moose. I have also been watching for that Elephant and have some 250 gr. Hornady solids loaded for the 340 Wby. and 338-06 but is it cheaper to dig the hole or put up w/the lawsuit?- Muddy

I say "shoot, shovel ( a whole lot), and shut up" on the circus elephant,ha! I saw a Husky at Cabelas awhile back, in 9.3x57. It was on a 96 Mauser type action. I think your 250 Hornady will do just fine! I shot them out of a standard 35 Whelen ( a 750 auto) and they were scary accurate too. So many bullets...so little time...I sent some 225 Woodleighs to Rickt down in Texas, he shot pigs with them in his standard 35 Whelen, worked swell.
