M1 Carbine caliber conversions?
« on: May 29, 2012, 12:53:05 AM »
I have seen the LeMag 45WinMag conversions, and I have read about other conversions.  I have also read that back when the carbines were more common (read: cheaper) that converting them to other calibers was fairly common.  I haven't yet been able to find even pictures of any converted guns.  Also; I have heard that in one of the NRA gunsmithing guides there was a write up on rebarreling them in different calibers.

Anybody have a copy of that guide?  I have no idea which edition it is in, only that it's not the one I have.  I'd love to get a copy.  If someone can steer me toward the edition number I'll at least know what I'm looking for.  Also, any other info or leads will be apreciated.

  Thanks.

Jim Calhoon make a 19 Badger out of 30 carbine brass, Haver MT.  He sells, converts and CZ rifle, I think his shop converts a TC barrel also.

I,ve even seen the carbine converted to straight pull bolt action.. The main limiting factor is the bolt face size, and of course the price of originals..

Universal made carbines on their own receivers.  They weren't conversions, they were complete new built rifles.

I'm looking for information on the canversions that (suposedly) used to be done to exiting carbines.  Aparently conversing them to 357, 9mm winmag, 9mm luger, and other small cartridges was not unheard of.  I found reference to a write up on it in an NRA gunsmithing manual.  Any of you guys have old editions of the manuals?  If anybody can tell me what edition that article is in I would really apreciate it.

The USGI carbines were good for the most part. The Iver Johnson I shot were not as good as the USGI ones some had feeding issues. Universal , Never saw one I would buy. IMI were nice but had some issues like sights falling off or crooked .
If converting a non USGI gun its a crap shoot as to if it would be reliable on makes other than IMI IMHO. With a USGI its a shame to destory history that collectors would pay for. Here some of the worst looking Inland guns are bring over 600 bucks and nice Winchesters as much as 1000 .  The exception might be the BLUE SKY re imports might not hold the value but not sure. The New Khar seems nice and expensive , maybe too much so for a conversion.
I always thought the 22 conversion would be nice , there is a company building one in 22LR now . The gun is a nice size one in 22 jet would be nice. But then I like the 30 carbine .
