mooner:  there are lots of barrel makers out there who will confer with you regarding the twist and outside dimentions of the barrel you want and advise you as to which would be best for the type of shooting you want to do.  One barrel maker I recommend is the Montana Rifleman - their barrels are top quality and they offer many different configurations.  They are located in Kalispell, Montana and although I forget their website address you can find it easily by searching for The Montana Rifleman.   HTH.  Mikey.

Why in the world would you want a faster twist in a 44Mag then 1-20 that Marlin uses?

I thought Marlin used something more like a 1 in 40.  Did not go check but have heard others complain about their slow twist rate.

Mikey gave some good advise. I have an Armi San Marco 1892 Win replica with a 1 in 12 barrel. It groups 300gr bullets much better than, say, a 250, so there's a weight range for any given rate of twist. Sounds like you want to shoot heavyweights, right? jd45.

Actually the twist in a Marlin Cowboy in .44Mag is 1:38", which was designed for the most common middle of the range of cowboy loads.
