Chamber adapters value ?
« on: July 10, 2012, 05:45:30 AM »
chamber adapters , In another topic we dicussed what gun might be the best to have in a survival time. There will be many needs people will face and many guns to meet these needs. I offered that a 308 with chamber adapter that allowed 30 carbine rounds to be used would be a good choice in many cases. This was a thought as I had not recived the adapter to test it. I said I would report back when it arrived , it has. Took about 5 mos to get it. It seems worth the wait. The folks making it sent a card telling me it might be a wait as they were waiting for blanks to arrive. Well last night I tried it and was pleased. I shot it at 30 yards and it was accurate to head shoot limb rats. My reason for having the adapter is to provide food like rabbit or limb rats in the same gun used for larger critters and bad guys. I think it is a good set up. Things to know if buying one. First in my Ruger it will not feed from the mag. What it looks like is a fired 308 case. So loading is one at a time. Remington or such with a push feed action may work better . Try a fired case to see if it feeds. I note this because if your rifle will feed them then having several could make it useful in some self defense needs. When shooting the fired 30 carbine case has to cool a min or two then removing it from the adapter is easy. There was no blow by at all . The noise (report) may have been as much as a light 38 spl. note this is what I heard you may be different. I also want to try this set up with a suppressor a good friend has one . It might be a very quiet set up like a whisper or black out if. the throat in the adapter is long enough heavy bullets could be used .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Did you index the adapter to ensure you get the accuracy you're expecting? (indexing - matching the way you insert the adapter into the chamber the same way and position - like on a clock face ...... everytime you load it?)

Also, don't forget to be discrete when talking about Whispers and silenced rounds!  Esp if one lives in a state where those aren't allowed!  Admittedly it might be fun to dabble with those concepts.  ;)

could be a fun way to get multiple power levels from the same gun.  .35 Whelen with .357 mag / .38 special adapter might be worth a look as well.

No I did not index ( bolt gun and did not even think about it  ) , accy was good. What I did was just shoot 10 rounds to see if they worked . It had been raining , was going to rain some more and it was late in the evening. I was 30 yards from a dead tree we shoot into and I shot a mark on the tree and hit it. Then shot 5 more into abot the same hole. I was not using a rest. The next 4 shots I shot things on our back stop hitting them. So the accuracy test was not on paper but seemed to hit what I aimed at. I hope to shoot at longer distance soon.
as for suppressors in Va we are allowed to have them with a fed transfer  stamp. I have several friends with legal one , maybe some day I will. We can even use them while hunting.
