Socialism is the dirrection of both parties at present. A depression is the only way to level the playing field. History has demonstrated the cycle of crash and recovery and the transition from the cycle of crash and recovery to socialism. I hope we arn't so progressed in social maturity that we are redy to leave the crash and recovery cycle behind us. ear

Both parties learned long ago that they don't have to field a "good candidate", but only one who can pretend to be "not as bad" as the opponent, so it degrades to the lowest common denominator and here we are again.

 Oh, and by the way, no president since Thomas Jefferson has ever proposed "paying off the national debt".
Clinton had a balanced budget but it didn't include debt repayment and neither did Bush's budget.

Actually Several presidents later a Democrat by the name of Andrew Jackson paid off the National debt, by selling Federal land.Didn't last long though ;)

most American's are somewhere in the middle as far as political ideas. those running for office know this and that is why in most cases the offering from either side looks alot alike. Obama was a break from the norm. he has taken the left way left to some to the uncomfortable left. any one seeking to beat Obama will need to apeal to the middle and most of the right . I like some of Paul's ideas but doubt those in the middle will consider them which means he can't win . So if Obama is defeated we will get someone with middle of the road political ideas . Someone who can be swayed into comprise on issues like tax , gun control , the UN etc. Therefore the make up of congress and courts  will be more important than president .
