Back in the fifties before everyone got so smart, I saw this many times. As blind ear said, this was perfectly acceptable, and usually a small pane was replaced with a piece of tin that had been cut out to fit the pane.
The first house my parents lived in, that I remember was a little ways from a creek, and only had two rooms. It had electricity "sometimes" unless winter ice knocked the lines down, but it had no plumbing or heating. An upright wood burning heating stove was taken down, and put up every year. My grandfather (dad's dad) lived across the wash, and they did the same thing in their 4 room house where dad, and his 3 brothers were raised.
To some Poopers' question, or offer of solution, may seem silly, but it is a sign that Americans are loosing their ingenuity. And that is something that will eventually cost us all collectively.
So! Poopers, not only will it work temporarily, it will work "every year" if you need it to.
