Vent a woodstove through a window?
« on: August 04, 2012, 06:14:19 AM »
Is it "acceptable" to pipe a chimney flue from a wood stove out of a window instead of the ceiling? I know 90 degree elbows are frowned upon but I need a temporary installation and going through walls isnt possible...( 5th wheel camper )

Seen it done in houses by replaceing a light, one pane, with tin with a hole in it. It will work until the powers that be make you change it. ear

Not sure about wood stoves, but this applies to gas furnaces:If you use 90's, keep the horizontal run short and make sure you get at least a 1/4" per foot rise on the horizontal section, and have a lot more vertical than horizontal to maintain the stack effect.
Run it above the height of the roof.
I would use double wall vent to keep the flue gases from cooling, so they keep moving up.
"Follow local codes", which is probably hard to anticipate in an RV, if "local" keeps changing.

The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Back in the fifties before everyone got so smart, I saw this many times. As blind ear said, this was perfectly acceptable, and usually a small pane was replaced with a piece of tin that had been cut out to fit the pane.
The first house my parents lived in, that I remember was a little ways from a creek, and only had two rooms. It had electricity "sometimes" unless winter ice knocked the lines down, but it had no plumbing or heating. An upright wood burning heating stove was taken down, and put up every year. My grandfather (dad's dad) lived across the wash, and they did the same thing in their 4 room house where dad, and his 3 brothers were raised.
To some Poopers' question, or offer of solution, may seem silly, but it is a sign that Americans are loosing their ingenuity. And that is something that will eventually cost us all collectively.
So! Poopers, not only will it work temporarily, it will work "every year" if you need it to.

I did it in a 4 room rental house in the 1970s. I put up a piece of plywood and mounted the metal isolator ring in the  plywood. Always be aware of safety standards and do NOT take any shortcuts. You cannot afford a fire. Might want to contact the makers of your camper home and check with them. Never know til you ask!

i did basically what your talking about when i built my house.in my mudroom i framed in a 2'x2 'hole in the back wall.tacked a thin sheet of metal on the outside wall with a hole for the stove pipe.ran stove pipe thru it and then bricked around the pipe. then i made a chimney out of 8 in well caseing. its worked fairly well for 15 yrs or so. you will want to keep your horizontal pipe to a minimum.it will plug up with cresote and soot and need to be cleaned out a few times each winter.id imagine a similar set up could be made to work in a trailer as well.

I agree but I feel it is as much about our being conditioned to "not" think for ourselves and that is enforced the the maze of burocricy that we have allowed to engulf us. We have become afriad of a government that "we serve" rather than useing a government that "we control".  ear

If you use two 45's and cut an oval hole, it will probably draft a bit better.
