Suggestions for 1st barrel on my sb2?
« on: May 23, 2012, 02:13:13 PM »
Just picked up my first sb2 receiver- serial num 289397.

Now it needs a barrel, am planning to use this primarily for a woods gun at first.  Open sights, deer at close range- prob 100 yard max.  Have been thinking about a 357, 44 mag, 45 lc, 30-30, 35 rem etc.

Down the road I'd like to add more barrels.

Looking for something interesting, and effective that doesn't kick like a mule.

I do reload, and depending on the round chosen, may cast for it as well.

Any suggestions?

45 Colt or 357 would be my first choices.

First of all, the serial number digits are meaningless when it comes to what barrels can be fitted to it if you're planning on a factory accessory barrel, H&R won't fit most rifle barrels to frames made before 2000, only the 357 and 44 mags, the two letters of the serial number are what's needed to determine that.  ;)

Personally, I would go with the 35 Remington or the 30-30 in that order. Either makes a great deer rifle and either will shoot cast easily. If you are going to be shooting it a lot, I would go with a 357 and ream it to a Max. 357 pistol bullets are about as cheap as it gets.

I agree to the 357.  Per Tim they should fit it to any SB2.  I might hold off on reaming until you get a bunch of Maxi brass to reload.

See the post on the BC 357 Talo.  I'd do that if I was sending it in, and get the short carbine forend with either 18 or 22 inch barrels.  Make sure you get open sights.

Otherwise, 30-30 is cheapest ammo around and Handi 30-30 are known for good performance.

I will go out on my own here, and say to go with the Comie round 7.62x39. Great round for deer ,it is a ballistic twin of the 30/30 with less recoil.

Thanks for all the great replies.  Its an NU receiver so should be good to go on caliber choices.  Looking at the NEF H&R site I only saw 30-30 and 45-70 listed with sights.  Dont have a preference between a factory fitted barrel or a good used one though.

You won't go wrong with either the 30-30 or 45-70, both available often used in the classifieds. BTW, there is no NEF any more, hasn't been for several years.  ;)

I too say go with the .357.  Ream it to Maximum.  It's the Handiest of all of them.  Little pop gun .38 loads to just about all the way up to .35 Remington levels.  Easy to load and cheap to shoot.  It's one I wouldn't be without.

Thanks again for the replies, guess I'll keep an eye on the classifieds page and see what comes up first.
