Barrels for stubbing?
« on: May 22, 2012, 08:10:16 AM »
I read about stubbing barrels and was wondering what barrel works best to start with - riffle, shotgun, .410, 20 ga, etc.?  Any thoughts?

You can use any of the barrels that you listed.  For any caliber that will be a moderate or higher pressure chambering such as above 30000 PSI use a newer manufactured barrel with a welded underlug apposed to the older brazed or soldered underlug.
Depending on what diameter barrel shank you deside to use the 20 ga. will usually require the least work in boring the stub.  If you use a stub from a rifle barrel that is the same caliber that you will be chambering for, you can even reuse the same barrel you cutoff because you are leaving the "old" chamber in the stub and starting fresh.  This would be like cutting off a 30-06 barrel at the front of the chamber swell where it narrows and reuseing the barrel to make a 30 carbine or anything that was not possible to rechamber the 30-06 to.
To my way of thinking you can go up to a 50 cal. cartridge with the standard size stub diameter of approx. 1.110.

Well keep in mind how you wish to stub also.  The 12 ga. is available in 3.5" chamber allowing for a little more overlap and room to taper down to your stubbed barrel.  Larry has done a bunch of different stubs, but the biggest guide on what is needed will be the barrel you want to stub.  ;)
