Canadian Gun Registry Status report

Although the gun registry law has been repealed it is not clear how this will affect American hunters coming into Canada as there is some discrepency between how some agencies and Provincial governments are reacting. The RCMP just recently indicated its acceptance of the change but what about border official's and provincial police forces. While I do celebrate the end of the registry I will be carrying my registration papers with me when I hunt until everyone has had their last 'kick-at-the-can'!!!! If you run afoul of the law here with regard to guns, penalties can be severe. If I sell a gun I will insist on obtaining I.D. (PAL etc.) from the buyer. Our police are notorious for being creative when applying the law and a lot of police are upset with the change. I am sure some of these would support unfettered wire taps and other 'stuff' that would enhance their ability to enforce the law at the expense of the personal freedom of decent citizens. I have NOT heard any news with regard to the destruction of all existing long gun registration documents YET!!! Will Quebec get its way and get the records so they can set up their own registry.
Most police though I am sure were always against the legislation from the outset in favour of more `boots on the ground` which is widely accepted as the way to deal with crime.
The criminal element in Canada never did agree to regiser their guns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well Mc, I guess time will tell, eh.  That stupid legislation turned many an honest Canadian into a criminal.  Speaking of criminals, I can't fathom why yours didn't flock in to register their weapons.  Ours certainly did . :o ::) Here in Michigan, the "boots on the ground" are going the other way....budget cuts.  I think Public Safety is the last place to make cuts.

A big local political issue this election is the proposed new Detroit-Windsor bridge.  What are the thoughts on your side of the line?

IMO
The de-registration of long guns did not change the fundamental law that anyone owning or carrying a firearm has to have a license to do so. I presume Foreigners(Non-Canadian) will still have to get the paperwork to bringing a firearm as before. BTW. I have to have ATF written permission to bring in a Firearm from Canada which requires type of rifle, where made, serial no, type and amount of ammo, where made and a valid hunting license or written invitation to a shoot.

Somehow or other I cant seem to follow the logic that making onerous requirements for non-criminals somehow makes them not commit crime that they didnt commit before.
Guess Im just a little slow or stupid.......  :P

Our  federal government thought the long gun registry would be a great vote getter in the greater Toronto area as there are a lot of new Canadians there from countries where guns are used on people on a regular basis and Toronto always has had a higher crime rate than anywhere else in Ontario. Some innocent person gets murdered in downrown Toronto in the middle of a shopping day by some idiot with an 'Saturday Night Special' handgun and suddenly everyone hates all guns!!
After the Ecole Polytech murders(which was an horrendous crime)they thought it would be a good idea to ban the offending rifle......I believe it was the mini-Ruger in 223. Just stupid....is all. What was needed then and needed now is to do a better job of identifying the ' lunatics' among us and do something BEFORE they hurt someone.
Out PAL system is a GOOD idea and I support it but when I had to register my 1858 Enfield I really got fed up with the 'anti's' and the feds who listened to them for the sake of the vote.
Now our police can get on with something more important than checking on decent citizens................................and the more power (boots on the ground) to them.

I have lived in Canada since 1971 and do recall the time when there was none of this Registration stuff for long firearms and don't recall any problems then. Did we get overrun with criminals sometime recently.
