Did not want to hijack the other thread so decided to start a new one.
Never, never, go to the Outhouse in Alaska without a gun.
Up at Arctic Circle on the Haul Road, (what you guys know as the ice road) a woman traveling alone, stopped at the pull off. She needed to visit the outhouse there. As she walked from her car to the building she was attacked by a Wolf. She beat it off and ran into the building, kicking the Wolf at the door and slamming the door shut. Now she is locked inside the outhouse, safe but unable to get back to her car. Several hours later a vehicle pulls in. The driver notices a Wolf hanging around the door to the outhouse. He also notices it is a lactating female. He grabs his pistol and getting out of his car the wolf started coming his way. He fired a shot into the ground in front of the Wolf. The Wolf turned and ran into the brush. Suddenly the woman inside the outhouse burst out thanking the man and heading for her car, and pistol. The couple in the second vehicle follows the woman into Deadhorse, where she got medical treatment for her bites and lacerations.
When our Beagles were 10 months old, and Sky was 7, we took a trip to the cabin on the Totat. The Beagles rode the 12 miles from the highway, in a kennel on the back of my 4-wheeler. When we arrived at the cabin I opened the door to the kennel and let the dogs out. They put their noses to the ground and took of all excited. Bert found his voice as they rounded the cabin, going towards the outhouse. I went to unloading our gear to take inside. Suddenly Bert got quite, but Ernie yelleped and her they come as fast as they could run. A good size Black Bear right on their tails. I grabbed the shotgun from the handle bars, racked a round into it, and prepared to fire. As I was working the slide the Bear veered off and went into the brush. I did not have time for a shot, it was gone. Ernie ran up and jumped up into the kennel. Bert stopped at my feet turned around and growled at the Bear. That was the last time Bert ran from anything. After that he stood his ground against Moose, Coyotes, Foxes, Black Bears, even Grizzlies. Luckily he never met up with a Wolf. Ernie hid behind Bert.
When Sky was about 10 or 11 he decided he did not want his Mom or Me walking him to the outhouse, he was big enough to go out there by himself. If he needed to go pee I let him go out by himself, since he only went to a big tree straight in front of the cabin. So early in the morning, just before sunup, when it was light enough to see, he slipped out of the cabin. I heard him leave, but thought he was only going to the tree out front. He did have enough smarts to grab his Mom's 357 as he went out the door. Earnie, the brain lame Beagle followed him. The outhouse is out back of the cabin, sort of back in the willows. You approach it from the side. As he walked up to the outhouse he noticed the door was ajar, also that it looked damaged. We always kept it closed and locked. Ernie growled real low and hid behind Sky. Sky circles around into the willows so he could see into the outhouse, with Ernie cowering behind him all the way. He saw something dark inside on the floor. He backed up to a big spruce tree, Fired a shot into the ground at the door. Sky said "That bear came out of there like a streak". Startled by the shot the wife and I jumped up and ran outside. I saw a small Black Bear running hard down the trail, with suddenly brave Ernie giving chase. Sky came strutting back to the cabin, telling how he had scared that ole bear. We need not go into what his Mother said, She was madder than an old wet hen, a flogging was close. My question was, "Why did you not shoot the Bear? Answer, "Did not want to". Just like his mother.
