If you had your druthers!

What would be your choice between a Model 1853 Rifle Musket or the model 1858 Rifle Musket in using it for both hunting and target shooting?

Tough to say.  With today's replicas it really seems to come down to barrel length and therefore sight radius.  So here's my take...neither.  That is for my hunting style, neither would get the nod as I do not hunt from a stand.   For target shooting, again I would prefer something else (Whitworth in this case)


Now that's me, for general use by a stand hunter and occasional target shooter, the shorter P53.  For the target shooter that occasionally hunts, the longer P58 is my suggestion

The 1853 was the three banded musket. There are two modles of 1858, one is called the sargents rifle and the other was the Naval rifle. One had a heavier barrel but I do not remember which. I do recall reading in various places that the 1858 shot better than the 1853. As for handing I would take an 1858.
I hut with a PH 1858 made in England, circa 1970s and find it a very acurate rifle with Patched Ball and Minie.

Thanks for the update guys!
I am going through a lot of scenarios on these rifles along with a couple of others, so at the present time I would be leaning towards the Mod 1858!
 Also been looking at some muskets in the Mod 1842, 1816, and the 1879!

If looking strictly for a hunting rifle I wouldn't consider any musket. Sporting rifles are generally shorter, lighter, easier to handle, have better sights, shoot flatter and cost less. If you're thinking of entering some competitions where muskets are required plus maybe some hunting then I'd look at one of the 24-32" barreled versions as being easier to handle.
