Just purchased would like to know more about this ? Hated the wood on it so bought a much pretty er stock set.
has scope mount .
 
any value,  not much use here in Illinois, but I had a H&R shikari and I handload 45-70 so I bought it.

Have an 1895 SLR stainless with laminate stock.  Very accurate, kicks like a mule.  I have ghost ring sights.  Of all my rifles and shotguns, it is the worst kicker. 
 
My largest other rifle is a 35 Whelen.  It is more of a push. 
 
I have a 3-1/2" mag Benelli SBE.  I have a limbsaver recoil pad on it and a mercury suppressor in the stock.  It is not a hard kicker even with 3-1/2" buckshot.

The .45-70 doesn't kick at all if you don't fight it.  Everybody tries to keep the gun from moving.  Don't brace into it when standing and when shooting off the bench get the gun up.  Crouching over into a hard kicker just beats you up.

I was sighting it in, in the summer with only a short sleeve shirt.  I used several loads.  The Hornady flextip ammo, 300 and 405 grain.  All seemed to kick harder than any other guns I have owned.  I can handle the kick, I just feel it more.  My only other gun to kick almost as hard is my Ruger 308 with the skeletonised stock.  I also have a 30-06 bolt gun.  All my semi's don't kick so hard.

A decent reciol pad plus wrap the lever front and buttom with leather . A good set of ear plugs then and your good to go.
Load some reduced loads at first with lead bullets  'til ya get used to the beast !! Remember to slug that bore before ordering the lead .

Relax.  You got the recoil discussion that comes up frequently when discussing 45-70.  There will be someone who has one of these guns and will comment on your value question.

I paid $600 for mine.  Stainless steel XLR version with laminate stock.  Price included a ghost ring sight installed to replace the semi-buckhorn rear sight.  Ghost ring is quick and accurate.  I can put a scope on, but I think levers look better without scopes.  After 200 yards you have a lot of bullet drop, but it is still deadly.  I had a friend that could hit a man sized target at 300 yards but he said it dropped about 18" at 300 yards.  I think the 45-70 is under rated for killing power.  Another friend shot a deer with one at about 60 yards and hit it in the backbone right behind the rib cage.  I split the deer in two.  Just because the bullet is slow doesn't mean it isn't as deadly.  It is a big heavy bullet that can plow through without exploding and doing a lot of meat damage.  Leaves a big hole for a good blood trail.

According to my Marlin catalog, the ss designation is stainless steel.  Lets see what the casca 1 say's it is.
