Jason,

Did you have to supply the Savage breech plug to SMI?  If so, can you give me a name or address, where I can pick the Savage breech plug, and a rough idea what it cost?  I am looking to do a conversion.  Thanks.

OSR,

Link below to a 10ML breech plug and you will also need to buy the vent liners.  I read that you can call Savage Firearms Customer service and buy the plug and liners directly from Savage. Also, if you search for "randy wakeman savage smokeless MZ" I believe that Randy Wakeman also sells these plugs.

You should check with SMI to see what make breech plug they used.  There is the possibility they used the older style Savage BP, or the used a breech plug which was made "in-house".  According to the description on Gun Broker, it is the: "Newer style breech plug for the Savage Muzzle Loader.  Removable with a 3/8" socket.".

I know you were having some problems with IMR 4198 in your conversion, did you finally get it shooting right?
Sounds like the bore isn't tight enough.

Get some harvester sabots, part #H4540B and use with Hornady .400", 200 grain XTP bullets. If your bore is tight enough you will get good results with H-4198, if it's not tight enough the powder will not ignite and the 209 primer will blow the load out the barrel a few feet.
If you experience this get some Accurate 5744 and you will never have any trouble with ignition. I always recommend the 5744 because I know it will be trouble free, you won't get as much velocity but the deer will never know the difference. ;)

Stay safe and always use a sabot.

GOOD SHOOTING!

Jason what ever you do don't use Trail Boss even though its bulky its a very fast burning powder like TiteGroup and pressures really spike when compressed. For the 4198 to work good with the 200gr bullet you need to be up around 56 to 62gr. And you can make a smokeless muzzleloader with an SW500 barrel, you would have to get a custom sizer and size down .500 bullets to around .492 depending on your nominal bore size.
