Another 24
« on: January 26, 2012, 02:53:39 PM »
I couldn't resist the 24F in .22 Hornet/12 ga. that I saw at Gander Mtn. today. It's in good condition with a little wear, but it is good and tight and the trigger pull is very good for a 24.  Maybe it was tinkered with since it looks like the buttstock was removed at some time.  Bubba did a little work on the Weaver base when he ground a taper on the front of it probably to clear a scope and hit the rib that the base mounts on.  The price was good, but not as good as the .30-30/12 that I picked up there about 7 years ago for $300.  If the barrels shoot close together I may keep it, and if not there is always the April gun show or an on-line sale.

I currently have a .22/.410, .22/20, .22 mag./20, .222/20, .30-30/20 and now the .22 Hornet/12.

That is an interesting combination.  When are you planning to shot it?  I would love to know how it shoots.

I can't shoot it until I get back from Florida in April.  I'll just have enough time to try it before the gunshow in Syracuse.  Yeah it is an interesting combination, especially since we can't use rifles for turkeys here.  If it shoots well and is regulated I'm sure I'll find some use for it ;D

I never knew they even made it.  Doggone it, now I have to get one of them!  I just found one http://www.gunauction.com/search/displayitem.cfm?itemnum=9632464  but won't pay that price. I don't care how rare it is >:(   I want to use it, not look at it!

Hey Gil

Welcome to GBO!

There was a 24 in the combination you where looking for in a pawn shop in Fl north of Jacksonville.  Flaflash might remeber the town or pawn shop.  This was some time ago, so the 24 might be gone by now, but it is worth a try.

Hi Gil,

Actually, not only did they make the .357 MAG/20ga...but I've read that they also made .357 MAX/20.ga...an even rarer combo.  I don't know a single thing about that caliber, but it's intriguing, I guess.

Truth be told, as far as the .357 MAG goes...I think I have to side with the crowd who frowns on handgun calibers in rifles.  In fact, I wish I had the link in front of me, but I recall reading a long and interesting article where the author compared .357 MAG in rifle vs .30-30...and he claimed it wasn't even close, the .30-30 wins hands down.  I think that sort of dented any affinity I'd ever had for the idea of fielding like calibers in revolver/rifle.

So while I get the attraction of having a revolver/rifle battery in like caliber, or the attraction of simply collecting another great Model 24 combo...the 'practical me' kind of shrugs.  Just my op.

I will have to look for the .357Max/20.  I really like the .357Max round

Like I said, I had never even HEARD of .357 MAX as a caliber, until I read online about Savage having made them...so I plead complete ignorance on THAT one.  It must have been produced (at least in part) during the 24V years, when the guns still had wood furniture and were relatively lighter compared to the synthetics which came later.  (I know this only because I was able to find a few pics of them online...see the link below for one of them).

Sadly the barrels were separated, something I'm not nuts about in this model gun.  I don't know what year they ceased to make the wood guns because the latest catalog year I have is 1980, when they were obviously still wood-stocked.
Only 4 combinations were ever offered in the fully-seemed barrel years:

.22lr/.410         (Stevens, 1938 or 1939, (Savage after 1949) - through at least 1980)
.22lr/20ga        (Savage 1950's - through at least 1980)
.22wmr/.410    (Savage 1950's - through at least 1980)
.22 wmr/20ga  (Savage 1950's - through at least 1980)

I am fairly certain the 1950 model year was the first one in which it was re-branded "Savage 24" instead of "Stevens .22/.410."

In the separated barrel years, where they still sported the old wood platform they offered the above, as well as:

.222rem /20ga   (1966 - through at least 1980)  ** From 1966-1970/71, other caliber combos still had fully seemed barrels...only model "24V," specifically, had separated barrels

30-30/20ga         (1972 - through at least 1980)
.357 Mag/20ga   (1979 - through at least 1980)
.357 Max/20ga    (??)
.223 rem/20ga    (1979 - through at least 1980)
.22 hornet/20ga  (1980 - ?)

My source for the above years is old Savage catalogs I have Cornell Pubs reprints of.  The earliest ones going back to the 1950's I don't know the exact years, as I don't have every catalog from those years.  And while I remarked "through at least 1980" because that's all the catalogs I have, it's well known that the .22lr and .22wmr combinations were made well into the 90's, if not the early 2000's.

To my knowledge, all other combinations came in later years when all 24's were the newer black (24F) or camo (24T) synthetic...although please correct me if someone knows better.

Here's a .357 Max gun the Google machine found for me -->  http://www.gunauction.com/search/displayitem.cfm?itemnum=9298955

I've got a newer 24C and was surprised that the barrels were better regulated than horror stories would have led me to believe.
Actually I can see a .357 barrel with .38 wadcutters as a small game taker though it would work on deer in a pinch.

The one I had was not regulated.  My current .222/20 and .30-30/20 are much better.  I have had quite a few 24's and have replaced the poorly regulated ones.  Finally all 5 curent ones are pretty good:  .22/.410 Stevens, and .22/20, .22M/20. .222/20 and .30-30/20 Savages.
