Committee To Vote On Wolf Hunt

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state Senate's environmental committee is set to vote on a bill that would create a wolf hunt in Wisconsin.
Wolves in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin came off the federal endangered species list last year. The states are now free to manage the wolves as they see fit.
The Republican measure would establish a wolf hunting and trapping season that would run from mid-October through the end of February. The Department of Natural Resources would be allowed to limit licenses and award them to applicants who build up preference points.
The committee is scheduled to take up the bill Thursday morning at the state Capitol. Committee approval would clear the way for a full Senate vote

Peterbuilt, git ur gun the season is coming!! Walker signed the wolf hunt bill today. Should be a go if some sissy judge doesn't put some phony stop to it.

 Now that Walker signed the bill our DNR has to decide how many permits to issue. With the low success percentage seen in western states I imagine the DNR will be stingy with permits and maybe we'll see a half dozen wolves shot....
 BUT...I'll apply anyway. I can think of a lot of spots up in Forest county to set up with a Fox-pro remote predator caller and a .257 Roberts... ;D

I hope We get lots of permits. We need to shoot a lot more than a few. Montana's season starts very late and hurts the success. If we start in October we can hunt them through deer season. This will really bring up the kill more than starting in December.

The $50. wolf license didn't make the final cut.  The application fee is ten bucks and the license is ninety bucks and change; $500.00 for nonresidents.  Half the licenses issued might go to the tribes.    Last I heard they wanted to have fifty wolves killed.   Expect one percent success.  The end result will be another giant increase in the wolf population unless our deer hunters amp it up a bit. 

Apparently the state is going to get rich quick on wolf licenses.  My son says the state will sell every license they print because deer hunters hate wolves.  I say we need a bounty on wolves like when I was a boy.

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

At least they agreed to shooting some of them. This might set a good precedent when it comes time to drop the hammer on them. I can envision the day when every deer hunter would spring for a $10 stamp on their deer tags for a wolf.


I encountered a wolf this last deer season. I'm glad to have the experience.  It would sure be nice to have something to remember the encounter by. ;)

Yes, ten dollars, not a hundred.   The DNR should allow 4 hunters on that hundred dollar license.   My take on all this is that the DNR is going to manage their wolf population at the expense of the northern deer.  (Can't be called a herd anymore).

Personally, I liked it better the way it was before.  There was no "hunting hours",  no "season" and no "license" to buy then.

 Wolf hunting is a very low success endeavor. Time to beak out the MB-750s & some beaver bait, add a stiff 2-prong drag. That's the key.

WON had a story on this.  Seems there recently were some men convicted of cruelty to wild animals, and the state anticipates problems with trapping and hunting with dogs.  What next?  I guess we can all go back to last year's deal if the state is too stupid to figure this one out. 
 
I just read that Minnesota will issue 4000 wolf tags & stop the hunt at 400 kills.  Realistically that means the hunt probably won't get "stopped" because I expect the success ratio will be well under 10%.   If they did actually suspend the hunt, I wonder if they would refund the license fees of those unsuccessful hunters?  If something like this happened in WI, that could anger a person who just paid $100. for a wolf license.
