Hey CB,
Make sure he put the recoil buffer back in. Take the forend off and you will see the recoil spring. Against the receiver there will be a recoil buffer sandwiched between two steel plates.
I just aquired a 1968 vintage BAR in 30-06, I took her apart for a good cleaning and inspection and found the recoil buffer was missing. I figured since this gun was 44 years old that a new recoil spring was in order along with the buffer.
I got the spring and buffer from Midway, the spring was about 5 bucks and the buffer was about 2.50.
I took the old BAR out yesterday with some friends and I ran about 90 rounds through it with no malfunctions and no bruises. There is no recoil pad on this gun just a plastic butt plate.
I now have total confidence in this gun for deer hunting.

GOOD SHOOTING!

Good advise Slufoot,

All the BARs I've owned have been really light in recoil, even the 338 Winchester Magnum. I was amaised how little felt recoil that gun had.

http://www.midwestgunworks.com/field_service_manual/browning_bar_fsm.pdf I had this same issue with a 7mm magnum and replaced the buffer which was crumbling and hard, fixed it right up.

Slufoot I took the Bar to Midwest gun works  and they did what you said. But it still kicks like a mule. I took it to Browning last Tuesday and they said they weren"t sure if they could fix it but I left it with them and am waiting to hear from them. If they can"t what do I do now ?

Country Boy when you finally hear from Browning I sure am interested in learning what they did to fix the problem.  And if they can't repair it I still would like to know why not.

I wonder if they somehow plugged up the gas vent port so it is not venting and getting too much gas? That would make it cycle quite violently.
