TRAPPER'S WIVES
« on: January 28, 2004, 01:38:49 AM »
I was reading the postings on "blonde coyote" and what Bog and trappenjoe said about their wives.  I think it would be nice to make honorable mention about our wives as "trappers wives"- girlfriends can be included.

Trappers are a unique breed of people and the same must be said for most trappers wives.  They can put up with us coming in with wet clothes that have to be washed immediately;  or muddy boots that didn't get cleaned off good before we came in the house and got mud on her good living room carpet.  They may put up with a bloody door knob or phone that has to be cleaned off cause you got a phone call while skinning.  They live with the accidents (WQ is testiment) of spilling or getting lure or urine on your vehicle or yourself (remember, the wives don't seem to have the same "sniffing" habit that we do and aren't prone to like the smell--Chanel #5 is more to their taste.)

The concern in their eyes for us when we come in soaked because we fell in the creek or when we go out to check traps when we are sick enough that we should be in bed; and if we stop and think, the list will go on and on.

Even the little things such as bringing us a hot cup of coffee when we are in the fur shed skinning.

When I was a "route buyer", my wife (in my absence) was turned into a fur buyer.  She would actually buy fur for me while I was gone and studied hard to be a good one.  I might be on the road 3 or 4 days and come in to find a big pile of fur in the freezers and she seemed to have the ability to make more profit than I did from what she bought.

Yesterday was a very long day working and I was pretty pooped when I got home.  I had quite a bit of skinning to do and my wife showed me her thoughtfullness by saying, " Joe, I wish I could help but I don't know how to skin".  Just another little encouragement!

I married a little Japanese gal some 34 years ago that was a "rich kid" and she lived in a city that had over a million people and her life was totally different.  Now she lives in a little community that has less than a 1,000 people and no Wal-mart and only one grocery store.  What a change for her.  She also took up with an old coot who has his fair share of quirks and who would rather be skinnin skunk than out on a ballroom floor.

YEP!  Trappers wives are pretty great folk!  I know mine is!!   How about some of you other guys?  Be proud of your wives and let all of us (and them) know how you feel.

Yeppers Joe those better halves  of  trappers  are unsung , unrewarded, back in the corner SUPER GlUE that keeps a trappers  home together while he is off sniffen scent posts and applying his culinary  baits in dirt holes.   I have a friend  whos wife does all the skinning and putting up of furs  and he just traps LOL.....I have to mention her name ( Crystal Sublisky) the grand  lady member  of the Wisconsin Trappers Association.  Of course her husband the cantakerous old smelling of yote gland lure , exmarine is Hank!

Great topic Rascal. Although my better half has never showed an interest in setting a trap(believe me I've tried) she has always supported me in my trapping and hunting. Even now days when it seems it costs me more money than I can possibly make. I don't tell her enough how much I appreciate her or love her. Thanks for the reminder Rascal, and as soon as I shovel the 2 foot of snow out of the driveway I'm gonna order some flowers!

Your right on the money Rascal.  Without my wife's support it wouldn't be any fun at all, the best thing is she supports me teaching our little girl, girls in a few years.
Tip from a carpetman Windex is one of the best carpet cleaners and cheapest,  Super Shootout is also real good but may be hard to find.  I have got to be the worlds worst for not taking my boots off after being out in the mud, so 90% of my house is hard surface floor covering.

Rascal,

You are right on.  My wife loves what I do and ALWAYS asks me why I did that or this.  Then she started setting traps you can set a lot of traps in one day with two working out of the same truck, problay more then two guys and two trucks.  She is great I am 25 yrs old and she is 22 yrs young and she would have it no other way.  This year she started asking about putting up fur so I skinned a fox and handed her the fleshing knife now she was scared out of her mind about wrecking the pelt but she did a great job and then I handed her a coon and she loved fleshing coon.  He words where you can see progress and I told her I have more coming so don't stop.

Married life!!!  I have the greatest wife and could live without her.  Will be married 3 yrs in Aug.  I know that isn't as long as most on here but you have to start somewhere and it still feels like I am dating her.  4 yrs of dating then marriage it great.

rd i know cute crystal also and she is one hell of a gal, hank has tried to get in the fur shed when she gets overwhemed and tried to teach her new ways of doing things, but alas all he did was ruin fur and get that skinning machine of a wife all upset. to this day he is not allowed in HER fur shed as she tries to set a new goal of over 600 coon to put up
as for my sweet wife there are far and few inbetween that can match her with putting up with my ways. she has come out and  helped with pulling fur when i have been a lil too tired, gone and checked sets for me when snow is too deep or farm roads to muddy for me to drive as she knows that my MS wont allow me to travel those distances to make  my daily checks... she is all that and a bag o chips whom without i wouldnt be able to keep trapping (now if i can only get her to set the steel i would have it made)
psssst as for crystal, she will do up your coon for a the giant size snickers

Mallard,

I hope you know what a mess my truck would be if I water trapped and land trapped.  She'll just have to wait.  We spend a couple of weekends a year beaver trapping and that is enough water for me.  But you know she does look real good in waders hauling all my steel GOD I love help.  Anyway yes someday she will get her wish tell then she will be digging dirthole and not pocket sets and smelling like skunk (Cachottier) and not like mud.

Mallard one more thing once this snow stops.  We'll be up tasting wine of all flavors so I now know where you live     And a smelly old trapper may be stopping by. :D

I agree!

Every year, my wife Lori does more and more on the trapline and at the conventions. She can answer questuions about lure or setting techniques better than many veteran trappers.

Last year she set a few traps, caught her first possum and fox, and did al lthe put up work on my rats and mink.  This year, she took the first basiclaly 10 days off at the beginning of land trapping and ran her own coon line. Got some real nice coon.

Next year, I'm getting her to make coyote sets- thats my goal!

She finished up all my canines after skinning- washed, put on, turned, brushed, etc. did all my coyotes.  Let me know if there was a nick in the fur! LOL. Showed her needle and thread....

When I set up a new waterline- nice to have an extra pair of hands she helps big time- but she doesn't like water trapping for her self(too wet and too cold) but does go along on checks pretty often.

She still puts up the mink/rats- I do all the skinning. she skun enough rats this winter to "know how if she has to" as I put it...but I think I'd have to be in a full body cast- if then- before that day will come... :)

Shes going to be a land trapper- As soon as we can manage- lori is going to semi retire. when that happens- shes going to be an accomplshed coyote trapper- and then the skys the limit!

Sure makes life easier when your significant other knows what you do and how to do it.

WQ;
My wife has seen some of your posts and she is wondering why I would want to go to Corrales and see some old F**t who might spill lure all over me. :)  :)

Actually, she said I needed a little vacation and I should go.  But it looks like it won't happen in the near future.   I am so covered up in work and skinning (something you wouldn't know about  ) that it will be impossible for a while.  Didn't get finished until almost 11pm last night and went to bed without supper. :?

Hopefully, later in the spring or early summer, we might get together for a couple of days.

Whoa there, WQ and Rascal in same truck!!!!!   Why the border patrol would be on them like burros on salt.  But i do understand Joe wanting to teach  the old burro trapper how to  actually set canine traps and  then the headaches of all that skinning.    Awww go ahead Joe go, you will make headlines for sure for the cause of humanity.  Just think of it  as being a good samaritan.

It is one thing for a wife to put up with a trapper, which mine has done for 25 years. But add to that a husband that also decides to become a trapping supply dealer too.She has learned to put up with an awful lot,and make do with a lot less, than most wives.
If I let her,she would help at evey convention I do.While the help and companionship would be appreciated, I won't put her through that.2 years ago I spent 43 nights in the back of my pickup, while doing conventions. Not something even a willing wife should go through.
I have her help me with 1 or 2 conventions a year,I do get a motel room for these shows.we have spent the last several years at conventions on our anniversary--even #25.
If you call while I am trapping or at a convention,it is my better half that answers the phone and packs and mails your order.
Her best line had to be after the 3rd or 4th convention she did.She said to me"I must be getting used to this,it doesn't bother me anymore to sit next to the fox urine and eat a sandwich".
Wives--You Gotta love em--or more to the point,They sure gotta love us,to put up with what the things we do.

I showed my wife how to set snares our first year trapping together. I ended up toting a 70# beaver back to the car for her later that week...and she still talks about her "bigger" catches than mine have been.
I trapped for years out of the trunk of a 95 toyota tercel. Coudn't beat it for gas mileage, was durable, and front-wheel drive. But, the trunk odors always eaked their way to the front interior area. She bought me a new truck last year so we wouldn't have to endure the smells throughout the rest of the season.
We have an understanding, too. Nothing of my hobby makes it into our attached garage, save for the freezer hooked up in there, and we are happy. I don't grab the door handles until I've "washed up" first, and my clothes stay outside until they get washed. She also realized how important my hobby is to me, just as I realize and respect how important her hobbies are to her (water skiing, boating, etc.) so we make every effort to make sure each other's souls are properly fed with these important refreshing hobbies each year. You must feed your soul, and you must take care of each other, including making sure your partner's needs are equally met and respected.

It is a wonder why they do put up with us.  I don't trap near as much as most of you.  Too many other hobbies such as bowhunting, rifle hunting and one of Tyler and my biggest pastimes... shed hunting.  They all take up a lot of my time.  The one great thing is the time I get to spend with Tyler doing all these things.  She does apperciate that because it keeps both of us out of trouble.  Springs work and harvest on the farm are killers for free time also.

I don't like going places, eating out and a lot of things that most married couples do to spend time together.  My idea of a night out is going for a nature drive with the family.  She does enjoy that.  I've never stopped her from doing the things she likes to do.  She doesn't stop me from doing the things I like to do.  Most woman wouldn't be happy with that.  I am just glad I found one who is.   She has a nice house, very nice furniture for the house, jewlery, a dependable car and an always a faithful husband who knows she was the best blind date I guy could have ever asked for.

Tim

ps...As of a week ago last Sunday, she is still a hotty even after becoming a grandma.  What happened to our youth???  :)

Bryan:
sorry haven't been on here for awhile. been burning a lot of midnight oil working on stuff for work (year-end financials, audit, etc.) and have had little time to check this sight.
missed trapping very much this year, and have really enjoyed perusing through the postings. actually been living my trapline vicariously through you guys, if you don't mind. had a promotion at work and was literally thrown to the lions. just hasn't been enough hours in the day to pull it off, seems like.
speaking of trappers wives tales, through all of this, my wife has been so supportive. she has really put up with my piles of trapping magazines laying around the house...seems to be very understanding of the fact that didn't get a chance to lay some steel this past fall, and she knows how much that has bothered me. she's the best.
Jim
