First DRT Coyote with the 1-V
« on: June 03, 2012, 08:24:54 AM »
No, it is not a special 8' long Ruger 1-V; its just a very small coyote pup; probably about 8 lbs, but its the first that the 1-V can pose with. Got the 1-V 4 years ago for the specific purpose of hunting coyotes. I have shot a couple of bobcats, deer, and crows, along with several reams of paper, but this is the first coyote I have shot with it.
I would like to think the pup was interested in my turkey assembly call or my rabbit squeal, but it was probably just wandering by about 80 yards away. When I saw the flash of fur moving down through a huge rut from a timber skid, I thought it was a groundhog, but when I saw the pointy ears through the scope on 6x, it was Christmas in June.
Unlike deer hunting, I won't measure coyote hunting success by the size of the animal. One dead coyote equals one dead coyote. This pup probably would not have taken down a fawn this summer, but I would like to think there will be a dozen more rabbits to hunt next fall and a dozen more turkeys in the spring.
I have to belive he is just one of a big litter that is close by in the area.

GOOD JOB!!!

I have been going out after dinner a couple lights for some "tough" hunting...

I have a friend of a friend with a large piece of property, backed to a huge piece and three small dogs... THREE times last week she had 4-5 coyotes standing in the yard after dark looking at her... She walked toward them (she was "watering'' the dog) with one of the 20# shelty's growling... NONE of the coyotes moved but she was spooked and ran in the house!

She has a shotgun, but when we shot it it recoils too much and she dosen't think she could shoot anything anyhow...

I park my truck between a couple other vehicles, backed to the field where the coyotes come out ad sit in the bed till dark... None yet, but I WILL get a couple. ;) I said it was tough hunting... ;)

Judging by all the dead coyotes on the side of the road, they don't seem to perceive the automobile as much of a threat.
Sounds like you are using your truck for a mobile blind.
Might need to try that with my Jeep Liberty.

Decided to get off the sofa and try again.
There was a coyote occupying my parking spot.
Wish I had brought my pistol.
Set up my quiver rabbit and foxpro caller in a clearing about 150 yds out.
Called once and within 10 minutes had one staring at it.
Missed! He sauntered off into the woods.
2 hours of shooting light left.
This is a blast!

Thats exactly right, they are close to the house and used to seeing cars n trucks. I also bring the Glock 10MM for anything closer, they can come form almost any direction and have been seen right next to the house. Even if the come form the farthest corner of the woods its a 150yard shot. the house is about 75 yards behind me, but there is tall grass almost all around out to the edges of the woods. There are lots of opertunities at under 50 yard shotsm at odd angles, so the Glock will be better then my 24" barreled 22mag...

I also use a spinner, but not a call here. I feel there isnt need, they come on there own and I rather not "edjucate" them. ;)

Second DRT Coyote with the 1-V
« Reply #5 on: June 06, 2012, 04:45:28 PM »
Went back to the same spot as Saturday and Sunday.
Put out a turkey hen decoy about 150 yards out in the same spot as the rabbit last Sunday.
Played Foxpro's "lost hen" call.
Not 10 minutes later, a coyote came right by.
It did not really fixate on the hen decoy, and it did not stop.
I yipped and it still didn't stop.
Couldn't get the crosshairs on it so I didn't shoot.

Called with a rabbit mouth call a few times over the next hour, then decided to try a different spot.
Unloaded the gun to climb down and I saw two pups moving through the leftovers of the clear cut.
Got the first one, then reloaded real quick.
The other one climbed up on a dirt mound and posed for me, but I mssed it. Dang.

Still a good day.
I plan to fish this hole dry.

22-250 with a 50 gr HDY SP, not even the super explosive version.
Its been quiet this morning.
Either too windy or they all stayed in to watch road runner cartoons.
Still beats cutting grass.

I'm thinking my calling doesn't really have anything to do with coyotes wandering by.
Must be on some kind of coyote highway.
Our deer lease is across the road from the county landfill.
This one was coming home from a hard day of eating garbage.

For those who think a single shot means just one shot, I shot at this one 4 times with my single shot before dropping her.
I think I hit her on the third shot because thats when she started spinning. Don't get much shooting practice out hunting.

I always hunted alone, never used decoys for hunting beyond a feather or three on a string "sometimes", never ever wore camo or used cover scents or bait, but did make and use my own mouth calls for around 50 years.   Proper setup in a spot that is currently being used by both prey and predators, AND the calls translated to great success all those years doing both ADC for landowners and sport hunting.   So for me anyway the calls did make a huge difference, and there were few out of the thousands a lip squeak or bark wouldn't stop for a shot, whether they be canine or feline or any other species that makes it living feeding on living game or carrion.    But it's not just about an easy meal, nor defending their territory or looking for a mate with predators.   Curiosity is a magnet for them that you can use with great success to help you level the playing field on their turf.    A call gets attention, sparks curiosity and can bring them to you from quite long distances.   Gives you a lot more opportunities than just hunting what happens to wander by.
