My encore should be in by the end of the week (w/ 209x50 barrel).
I'm thinking about getting a 15" 45/410 barrel.
Is this barrel a smooth bore?  I want it for shooting 410 shells.
I'm hoping it might work for crows and skeet.

How good is the pattern?  What is the effective range?

I'm recovering from shoulder surgury and can't shoot shotguns till September.  Crow season opens in July.

I do not have an Encore barrel in .410 but I do have a Contender barrel and I would assume a 15" barrel to be rifled in either. Any barrel under 18"??? cannot be smooth bore - Gun Control Act of 1934??? - so I assume all TC barrels capable of shooting the .410, under 18" to be rifled. But don't take my word, do a little research to confirm.

springer is correct, the 45/410 barrel is rifled. That is also why it comes with the screw in choke which is not so much a choke as a device to stop the rotation caused by the rifling. With the right load 15 yards is about as good as you can hope for before your pattern really falls apart. The most effective patterns seem to be with # 7 1/2 or 8's. Don't even consider #4unless you go to 3" and even then it will be dismal.

Thanks for the info.  It is tempting to get for crows.  I don't think it would be very effective on the skeet range.  Sounds like it would be a perfect squirrel gun.

They are not real useful, but I do shoot skeet with mine every now and then.  It took some getting used to, but I hit 4 out of 5 last time I tried it on skeet.  It is just a toy.

Like everyone has previously said, more of something to play with than being very useful (since when is that a necessity to purchase a barrel one for its usefulness). Last year I did kill a turkey with mine; makes it more challenging than some 10 ga 30" barrel shotgun using #2, 3 1/2" Heavi-shot  1/2 a mile away. I did pick-up some turkey targets on clearance @ Wally World today. I plan to patern my barrel to actually see effective range. Will post if is ever get this done.

springer222, my contender(super 14) 45/410 bbl. just loves Win. super X in 7-1/2 shot. No way a squirrel is going to get away at 20 yds., maybe a little more.  Pat

I use 3" #4's - Remington high brass. I'm not sure the distance, but I would guess 15 to 20 yards, maybe a little closer. There were two of us working three gobblers, and we called them in close. He was not huge, ~6" beard, but with my pistol, I'm very happy. Next is with a bow.

I have used my Contender 45/410 for several years on grouse and Love it!  25-30yds is a max but it does do a number on them.  The part about using 7 1/2's or smaller is the ticket.  anything bigger and when you pattern it you get some weird patterns.

well if it is rifled, do they make sabo's in a 410?
if so i guess you can have a shot gun hang gun in a shot gun only state

Just a curiosity thing, but does the GCA of 34 state EXACTLY what rifling is?  I ask because I know Hastings makes shotgun bbls for the popular long guns with what they call their "wad lock" design.  Basically this is straight rifling (no twist.)  Would this qualify as rifling?  Not that I think this would get anyone anywheres as pertaining to this post, but like I said, its a curiosity thing.
